We need someone who can bring real dark grit to it. Show the horrors of war and that people die. We don't want some Childrens take on it or someone who is not knowledgeable or a fan of the brand. the target audience is us in our late 40's now collectors from the 80's not kids.
GI Joe is not and should never be "Zero Dark Thirty" and if Hasbro or retailers or moviemakers ever decide that GI Joe only appeals (or should only appeal) to 40something collectors, that will be the day the brand dies a final death (or at least the ARAH mythos if not the brand name). Like virtually every other brand of our youth you'll never see it go beyond "PG-13" rating. GI Joe has limits on its "grit and realism" and ultimately should keep it that way. It doesn't have to be completely sanitized but it's not some meditative treatise on the horror of war because it's not really about war. It's "military fantasy." Someone who's "knowledgeable" of the brand would know it's got some campy, cheesy elements to it (particularly among Cobra but honestly among the "Village People With Guns" Joes too). It's got ninjas and science-fiction devices and a fair bit of wackiness. Like it or not, these things are all part of GI Joe, and without them, you at best get a half-assed GI Joe and at worst get something that isn't really GI Joe at all but for some window dressing. Ultimately it's about selling toys concerning colorful military characters fighting even more colorful paramilitary super-terrorists, not validating 40something year old adult collectors desires for the franchises of their youth to "grow up" with them. It's supposed to be fun and entertaining. Ideally a GI Joe film should have a feel similar to most Marvel movies: Serious enough to suspend disbelief and take the plot seriously, but fun/funny/entertaining enough that you don't take it TOO seriously. EDIT: To be clear, it's fine to not enjoy the "wacky" or "non-military" aspects of GI Joe and prefer they get downplayed. Just like there are lots of Star Wars Fans that want Jedi and Sith and "Force" stuff to be downplayed in their Star Wars media. But you can't remove major underpinnings of a setting completely and then say you're doing any sort of accurate adaptation. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-02-2022 at 12:16 PM.. |

Rob Cohen is no longer employable, actually.*

Meanwhile, I would go way (way) outside the box: For a live action version of "Arise, Serpentor, Arise" ... I'd choose South Korean director Jo Hung-see. His 2021 film "Space Sweepers"** is a very clever, visually stunning "sci-fi western" made on a shoestring. Plus, most importantly, the film was hugely successful internationally (and on Netflix). What Hung-see could potentially achieve with a bigger budget and a better plot blows the mind. For a more modestly scaled "GI Joe: The New Class" sorta thing*** ... Mariama Diallo is a major rising star who has directed a pair of absolutely brilliant horror movies ("Master" and a short film called "White Devil"). * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Co...se_allegations ** https://www.hisstank.com/forum/5398355-post9374.html *** https://www.yojoe.com/comics/joe/joe82.shtml

The best director would be James Gunn. He directed the first 2 live-action Scooby-Doo movies, 2 (going on 3) Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the Suicide Squad (sequel) movie and spin-off Peacemaker show.

And I personally wouldn't care for this at all. I don't like James Gunn in the slightest and I would be so disappointed to get a G.I. Joe movie where he makes a bunch of jokes about them all being village people having sex with each other or something and playing "in the navy" whenever Shipwreck is onscreen, and kills random Joe's unceremoniously. But I know some people like how he handles big ensemble casts so I get how some people would want him.

He didn't direct any Scooby-Doo movies, he only wrote them.

If anything we need a director that will take the franchise in a direction that makes it successful. |
