There's something very odd about that Firefly/Rock showdown like it takes place in a made for tv movie, but it has been awhile.

Lordy both sucked hard.
Rise had the feel of an interesting Joe story that then got turned into Duke's soap opera. Rex really should have stayed Dr. Mindbender IMHO and just had CC as someone different. Cobra Commander didn't NEED an origin, and certainly not as the old friend turned evil. Retaliation had some great stuff that felt GI Joe (the space weapon, Zartan cunning, Firefly) but then got overwhelmed with the Rock being the Rock, Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis, and a totally unrecognizable Lady Jaye and Flint. And they also had to add in a separate ninja story too. I actually LIKED wimpy Destro in Rise and him being an arrogant douche who got screwed over by CC was a different take at least. Baroness was cool until she needed to be a good guy. Retaliation's best part was Cobra Commander being Cobra Commander finally. And Jonathan Pryce chewing the scenery. |

Retaliation beat ROC for me by miles.
ROC has its fans, (as all movies do), but it was clear most people didn't like it. At that time, the fan base, in terms of an online community, was as big as it ever was. There were several Joe fan sites like HT. Looking back now, some 13 years later (wow time flies), I feel like ROC was always destined to be abhorred by the majority of the 80s kids who had grown up, had families of their own and were active in the various forums. It came on the heels of the 25th anniversary line, and Hasbro, to their credit, were trying their best to get out fan favorites to their fan base before ROC product hit shelves. They did not have to do that. But they did. These were the Cobra Island packs. And they even managed to sneak in some others like Charbroil in the ROC line. A lot of people didnt like it, because it wasn't an ARAH duplicate. And they feared it would stop them from getting more 80s accurate versions of characters in the modern design. Others were unimpressed, and shrugged it off, blaming the writer's strike and resolving themselves to the point of view, that it wasn't supposed to be a hit. It was supposed to be a fun popcorn flick. Though I disagree with that, as Hasbro undoubtedly wanted Joe to be a successful franchise once again as TF had become. Even those who were open-minded and fair about it, thought the accelerator suits and melting icebergs were both unnecessary and dumb. As far as the toys go, they were everywhere, before going on massive clearance. I thought some of them were good, others not so much. I couldn't get past the blue camo. The Joe's are supposed to be unique, and they seemed to be too similiar and in ugly colors to boot. It did not kill Joe at retail, however, and in fact, some of the best stuff Hasbro did in the modern era scale came after like POC and the 50th stuff like Lowlight and the definitive version of Destro. Retaliation was better for me for several reasons. Gone were Tatum, (the hip hop version of Duke) and Cobra Commander, (with whatever that was supposed to be on his head). As well as Heavy Duty, a character who came much later in the ARAH run and I had knew very little about. In their place were more familiar and favorable characters like Roadblock and Firefly. The addition of Willis as Joe Colton was enjoyed for the humor he brought to the film. The storyline with SS getting his thirst for reckoning on Zartan was another favorite scene. And the entire silent battle between SE and SS was a fantastic nod to the famous Marvel Comics #21, Silent interlude. John Chu was an actual fan, and being a fan is not the be all, end all of all things making a film. It can, and usually does, make a film a little more enjoyable when it is an established, popular universe with an existing fanbase. As a fan, Chu knew what was magical about the universe and it's characters, and significant events like the silent issue where we orginally first discovered SE and SS were linked. The toys had some duds, but some gems too. A definitive Firely, A definitive SS and a great SE with Timber stuck out. And there were more. As for Snake Eyes the movie, I have not seen that. I've never felt the desire to. Maybe one day, but at the same time, no big loss to me if I dont. I do hope some day, Joe, as a film catches like wildfire, and that as a toy line, it becomes so massive and successful, that fans from all eras have something to enjoy.
