Hasbro/Paramount needs to fire (or buy out the contract of) di Bonaventura

I looked at Box Office Mojo and it had the domestic take at $22,282 through 8/1/21. It won’t get better domestically, and I would be surprised if it is any different internationally. This movie deserves it. It pains me to keep harping on this, but I basically feel betrayed by this depiction of the character.

So, fake eyes is bombing on theaters. It must be because of covid... /smh. Silly communists.
On the bright side, there is Resolute and the original comics. If Hasbro really wants to do right by this brand, remake the comics or make a whole new cadre of characters based on the soldiers and the stories that came out of Iraq and Afghanistan. It would be about time these folks got some glory or recognition.

In two years, the only thing I will remember about this movie is the CGI snakes.

That said, I'm not sure it would have much of an impact on Snake Eyes at this point either. Quote:

There's plenty of places to recognize and celebrate our troops and their sacrifices. I'm just not sure a fantasy toy line for children is the place for that. And as an adult collector, I would really prefer not to see the harsh reality I see in the news end up as part of my escapist toy hobby.

I think we must factor in that people just might not like these the hero before the hero became the hero sort of films. Opening weekend for the Han Solo origin film was $84 million. Good for some films but only a drop in the bucket compared to $220 million opening for The Last Jedi or $177 million opening for The Rise of Skywalker.

Sergio Leone's Man with no Name films are absolute masterpieces, and we know pretty much nothing about Clint Eastwood's character's past. A bit in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and that's pretty much it. Commando isn't a masterpiece, but it successfully avoids telling much about Matrix's past, his team, or the bad guy. These movies tell you what you need to know for the story and that's all. They're much more concerned with who these guys are now than how they got here. I think the obsession with origins is kind of a recent thing, probably due to superhero films, and not necessarily a good one. |

Too true. A huge part of what made the original G.I. Joe RAH comic work so well was that Larry Hama foregrounded the whole thing in his military experience in Vietnam. Updating the characters' backstories to make them GWOT veterans (and hiring a writer with more recent military experience) would help retain that resonance and sense of realism, but Current Year Hasbro's just sucked up too much koolaid to do any such thing, I'm afraid.
Actually it would be very fun and interesting to see a Gulf War rooted version of the characters. I have often wanted to see the prior war experiences of the other Joes who served in Vietnam. There are hints and references to some of them. Snake-Eyes and Stalker tend to have some extra years on them compared to most of the original 13 though in my understanding of ARAH except Hawk. Also maybe Rock and Roll, Clutch, and Zap although I can't remember if that is implicit.
