It has been exposed multiple times that the whole movie critic industry, or whatever you want to call it, is corrupt. There were movies in recent years that audiences overwhelmingly loved and every movie critic went out of their way to write hate articles about. They are just another group of bought off propagandists. I thought most people knew this and stopped paying attention to professional film critics?
The one thing that is accurate are the box office numbers and that is the only thing I am looking at. And it is not looking good. |

And not all critics are created equal. Read Manohla Dargis or A.O. Scott to discover what true film expertise looks like. As Jack Handey says, "Sometimes I think the so-called experts actually ARE experts." Of course, this is all irrelevant, anyways, since audiences didn't like the movie either. ...

It didn't and it won't. Go to Variety and Box Office Mojo and read the articles. This did not make the money it was expected to. Even figuring in COVID. It does not sound good for this film franchise based on those articles. It cost $88M to make. They marketed the shit out of it. I saw ads for it everywhere. Variety said it will have to make $170M just to break even. This movie is not going to do that after a $13M opening. It will make probably less than half that next week. I actually thought the movie was OK. Nothing good but not terrible either. But this will go down as a flop, lose millions of dollars, and this very well could then end the current era of G.I. Joe. I think we all should be a little concerned.

The one thing that is accurate are the box office numbers and that is the only thing I am looking at. And it is not looking good. For example a food critic can't give Taco Bell a glowing review just because I have those days when I have a craving for their version of Tex/Mex food. Maybe I can overlook a quality control issue with an action figure, but I'd expect a toy critic to point out those quality control issues. I enjoy my Mazda but I wouldn't expect a car critic to give it the same marks they would give a high end sports car. A professional critic is expected to give a run down of the merits and flaws then it is always up to the potential ticket buyer if they want to buy a movie ticket to see something or not. Marketing can be highly misleading so some people want more than just trailers or have they loved the brand in the past. |

Just got out of the theater a few hours ago, my thoughts largely echo many others' on here, but I'll throw them out there anyway. Overall, I'm happy for any GI Joe movie, but this one really didn't hit a home run for me.
-Locations: I loved the Japan locations; it made me want to visit Japan with my kids! Both the cityscapes and rural/ninja castles looked fantastic. -I liked the idea of COBRA being a unifying force for all the bad guys of the world. -I can't argue with the "Scarlett was totally unneccesary" argument, but I was actually getting a bit bored with the movie and perked up at her introduction. -I liked Ursula Corbero's Baroness...although I'd probably like just about any incarnation of Baroness. -Andrew Koji's Stormshadow was good too, although I felt like the writing let the character down a bit. -Peter Mensah's Blind Master also gets an honorable mention. -Stunts weren't bad What I didn't care for: -Henry Golding never won me over (acting or as written). I feel like he was kind of jerk, who screwed over this clan who took him in. I can see how they'd like to do something new with the character, but I never believed that his dad's killer *actually* rolled dice to see if his victims lived or died; he was there to kill Snakey's dad one way or another, and the he didn't have the charisma or acting chops to convince me that he was somebody who would toy with his victims like that either. It really didn't land for me. -Shaking camera work. I hated it. -The giant snakes were horrible. The movie seemed pretty grounded until then, and it was sort of a jump-the-shark moment for me. I will say despite those thoughts, I did feel like they built the tension pretty well when he first got in there. -Magic crystal was also horrible. There's probably more, but except for kind of liking Scarlett, I don't have that much new to add to the discussion. The movie did make me think about what my personal "good" GI Joe movies are though. Not necessarily in order, I'd say: -GI Joe Resolute (amazing since it's from choppy vignettes!) -GI Joe: The Movie (a nostalgia pick, I'm sure) -Mission Impossible 3: (I do my own mental gymnastics, but like to think of it as one) -GI Joe: Retaliation -GI Joe: Rise of Cobra (probably my Baroness weakness) -Casino Royale (mental gymnastics: Bond = Chuckles) I hope the movie does well enough to keep the series going, but poorly enough that they say "man, we've got to change some things for the next one". I love Hama's early Snake Eyes stories, but I think the character suffers from overuse and it's probably a lot tougher to do a live-action version of him anyway. |

1) When Hasbro stops being anti-military and somebody writes a dope story. 2) When you make stop motion movie using your JOEs.
