If Paramount was that optimistic about this film, they wouldn't have released it in August.
The marketing costs alone are going to sink this flick. I think it *might* break even after worldwide/DVD sales come in, but its not a giant success by any means. |

It's a cash cow.
Pay Cable Rights Overseas Rights Basic Cable Rights Broadcast TV Rights DVD Blu-Ray Downloads It's got lots of cash to still bring in. Box Office isn't the be all end all anymore. |

Anybody know if the reported $170M production budget included marketing? I'm guessing "yes", but want to make sure before I comment definitively.

ROC certainly suffers form an August opening, but it doesn't reveal confidence. you have to ignore the $175 million dollar investment Paramount put into it. that easily disputes your position. |

What you should do is compare it to Fantastic 4 becasue they came out at the same time (among other things) and it is right on track.

Yessss, they should have released TF2, STAR TREK and GI JOE, all films with a similar target audience, in the same summer slot! Perfect marketing sense...

On that note I am going to say it was somewhat of a success. The other day I was in Target and saw a mom and her little boy school shopping. He was wearing a GI Joe back pack they clearly hadn't paid for yet and was begging for the GI Loe lunchbox to go along with the other GI Joe school stuff he had in the basket. Yes, I was being a nosy shopper when I heard him begging for GI Joe. It also appears that some Joe figures and small vehicles have been moving quite regularly at the Target and WM stores around me. So someone is buying them even if it's not me. Things like the Raven, Pit and so forth aren't really selling well at all though. It could just be that they're price is a bit much right now.

This movie performance thus far is mediocre at best. It has a long way to go before the studio breaks even. While not an outright flop the money spent vs the money that cam in at this point is not the most encouraging from the business standpoint. Yes in the long run the film will pay for itself but I would not be surprised if the sequel will happen anytime soon. They pumped the hell out of the advertising and it seemed to be a mixed bag. The DVD will truly decide the sequels fate.
What's the overseas tally? If that was close to domestic than that may off set thing. All the non Joe fans who saw the film gave a thumbs down so word of mouth seems to be hurting this flick. We shall see this Xmas when the DVD hits. One thing for sure is the toy sales seems to be drastically slowing up. The sale at my local Targets did not make the dent I thought it would. |

I think it's funny how those that hated the movie are providing all of this evidence to support that the movie is failing, and those that liked the movie are providing the contrary.
If a sequel means that it's a blockbuster, then that's what it is. "The studio's vice chairman, Rob Moore, confirmed that a sequel will soon go into development." 'G.I. Joe' opens to $100 million worldwide, but will it hold? | Company Town | Los Angeles Times If there isn't a sequel, then there won't be. It's just one in the line of the legacy of GI Joe. For me, it was just a live action episode of the original cartoon series. Over the top characters, with over the top tech, fighting over the top villains with an over the top plan for world domination. At least it wasn't Transformers or Transformers 2 garbage.....regardless of the money those turds made.
