LOL, the whole point of Hamilton is that it's an all-new rap musical. It's not an adaptation of anything pre-existing. It is an ORIGINAL play. There was no "recasting" done. It is in its first ever cast. They are specifically putting black culture and music into a historical story. What you should be asking is if it would be okay to have Hamilton be recast with all-white actors. The play is still in its first ever incarnation with a black cast, and the movie adaptation stayed faithful to the ethnic makeup of the cast. What do you think the reaction would've been if the movie had used all white actors?
How about the typical "this character was not white, they shouldn't be played by a white actor crowd?" That crowd has the loudest voice in the media and is the only crowd of these two that Hollywood listens to at all. They now have the power to get any white actor fired if they're cast as a non-white character. And I'll keep screaming, moaning, shouting and complaining as loudly and proudly as they do until we have the same power to stop the terrible recent casting choices behind Snake-Eyes, The Little Mermaid, Batgirl, the rumored Superman, etc. I will always argue for ACCURACY in doing live-action adaptations of existing fictional material. Yes, you are correct that Hamilton is literally an all new play and cast. It’s still an ‘historical’ play that melds what actually happened in history with rap and a cast that represents modern America. They ‘recast’ existing historical people, not characters based on plastic toys. They recast them with white actors and that is what I wanted to research to see if anyone threw a hissy fit about that (it appears they didn’t, shockingly). Lin-Manuel Miranda wanted to tell a story about America as told by what America is today. It’s not about ‘black culture’ as you stated, it’s about American culture. A lot of people here like to turn around and throw they whole “well the it’s ok to cast Black Panther as a white guy” it’s ok to have “Gary Oldman to play MLK” as if it’s some sort of gotcha. I’ll keep this to fictional characters: Black Lightening and Black Panther’s character is a person of color. That’s who they are. The basis of their character is tied around being people of color. Snake eyes character is tied around him being white; it’s tied around him being a mute, scarred, spec ops commando who was an outsider to the ninja clan/Japan. And yes, a person of color can play Superman and I have no problem with that. Superman was an alien. Pretty sure an actual alien planet is not going to be full of pale white dudes. Ditto Captain America. Captain America represents America and America is more than white dudes. One of the best Captain America stories was that of Isaiah Bradley. Heartbreaking and what probably would have happened if Captain America was historical rather than fictional. Same with Tony Stark. Can be played by any race as long as they are self confident and arrogant. Last edited by PFC Hudson; 07-25-2021 at 02:59 PM.. |

Technically, Hamilton is an adaptation of real-life historical events.

PFC Hudson, you just couldn't have more of a double standard. You list off every fictional black character that you can think of and say they have to be played by a black actor. Then you list off white characters and say they could all be played by non-white actors. Including Superman, who has one of the most iconic and famous visual appearances of any fictional character in the world. I thoroughly, completely and fundamentally disagree with your championing of miscasting. Fictional characters should all be cast in live-action with people who look like they do, period. YOUR opinion of what defines a character is meaningless. From a sheer marketing standpoint, we know that changing the well-known appearance of a title character in a movie tends to produce a colossal failure at the box office. Catwoman, Ghostbusters 2016, Annie, Fantastic Four, Wild Wild West, ScarJo's Ghost in the Shell, The Rock's Hercules, now Snake-Eyes. Audiences want ACCURACY. Heck, people complain even when Lex Luthor isn't bald in a movie.
I know that I personally identified with Spider-Man more because I looked like him. I could imagine putting on the costume and passing as Spider-Man. There are kids, or adults, all over who feel that way about certain characters. Changing their appearance takes that sense of identification away from them, makes them sad and disappoints them. It's totally wrong and immoral to do. You're taking away a kid's ability to closely identify with a character. There is all kinds of subtext that is put forward when you know Snake-Eyes is a white guy. Look at the Kill Bill movies. You could not just have cast Lucy Liu as The Bride and had the movies come out the same way. She could've been an Asian-American, but it doesn't change all of the "movie assumptions" that happen based on how audiences interpret an actor's looks. When you have a white person operating in an Asian culture and with Asian fighting styles and weapons, there is a whole different angle that comes into play in a story. You feel they are an outsider, have different insecurities and face different challenges. It adds a different angle to the story. I feel like if anyone was racist, it was DiBonaventura. He looked at a character who is a ninja and uses a samurai sword and just ASSUMED he must be Asian. He probably saw it was a white character and just didn't care, because his perception was only an Asian character would learn those fighting techniques. He's the guy who got caught making an invalid judgment about a character based on race.

What does Ghostbusters 2016 have to do with accuracy? None of the women were playing existing or established Ghostbusters characters.
Also The Rock's Hercules? That's a reach, sorry. The Legend of Hercules starring Kellan Lutz in 2011 bombed as well. Also, I don't think Will Smith's casting as Jim West in Wild Wild West is the only reason that movie bombed. |

YOU identified with Spider-Man because he looks like you. Ok, but the problem is spider-man identifies with every skinny kid. His color never defines his origin because his origin could be anyone's. I am black and identify with spider-man because he was a skinny kid, not your average bulky full of muscles superhero. so for the sake of the discuss, how if spiderman was played by a non=white person/actor etc, mess anything up with the story? And i am not advocating for us/hollywood to start changing famous characters color or origins but it erks me when some miss the point that the color of the character doesn't or shouldn't affect the story, especially if their origins have nothing to do with their color Last edited by Ghost 002; 08-02-2021 at 04:41 PM.. |

Just trippin this thread is still around. RIP hooded coco; We shall remember you...
The Spider-Verse makes all wishes possible. No need to mess with the ID of a legend. Maybe if the producers of Snake Eyes had led with the premise of a Joe Multiverse, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. |

Paramount is moving forward with another TMNT movie even after the last one was a huge bomb because they’re in desperate need for franchises. They’re not going to give up on GI Joe.

Keep in mind Paramount owns the TMNT IP. They bought it whole cloth from Eastman and Laird.

I actually found TMNT 2--which Dish persists in saying it's the 89 version, you bastards--a decent sequel and liked it better than the first. Though it was a 'late night but too tired and hot can't sleep so what's on' summer watch. Taken under those conditions I could see it moving forward. Perhaps they should just go direct to digital with the next.
BTW, who the hell at Hasbro thought TMNT Power Rangers was a good idea? Someone was smokin some good stuff at that meeting. |
