My model for the perfect tone for a GIJoe movie is Clear and Present Danger.
Still a summer popcorn flick, but manages to feel feel like there are real stakes. I realize we're all going to hit somewhere different on the scale between fun and serious.

I've been saying this the whole time. GI Joe was awesome when the only ninja was Storm Shadow. But Hasbro made ninjas take over the entire franchise. GI Joe was supposed to be about modern military fighting terrorists. Not ancient swords & kung-fu.
If I had my way, GI Joe would look like the new trailer for Battlefield 2042. |

Also let's not forget Larry Hama himself played a role in the creation of this new origin story and that Henry Golding stresses in most of his recent interviews how he is trying to honor Larry's comics (hence him using the classic uzi and not other weapons like how newer depictions of SE typically use)

It does not look like the GI Joe movie I would make if I were in charge, but judging by some of the posts here, perhaps the movie I would make wouldn't resemble the "real GI Joe" that many other fans have in mind either.
It does, however, look like a low-stakes / high-action summer romp that maybe takes itself a little too seriously, and I've enjoyed many such films over the years so I might as well try to enjoy this one. Featuring nods to characters and source material that I know and love is just a bonus. |

I think he just meant that too many existing characters got upgraded to ninjas and it watered down the status and mystique. The ninja back drop made Joe awesome for sure but I believe he just meant that too many ninjas lessened their impact, not as much an issue of realism. That’s just my take. Destro and Zartan alone negate any illusion of realism,Raptor sealed the deal Lol.

Obviously this sorta thing is highly subjective, but what leads you to believe the movie "takes itself a little too seriously"? Because that isn't really the impression I've been getting (based on the synopsis/spoilers).

Also, you think a jet pack is fantasy or sci-fi? The U.S. Army made a jet pack in 1959. 59! They realized it was too dangerous and dropped the idea but if we wanted jump troopers with jet packs today we could easily have them seeing that the tech is OLD. 62 years old. Not a James Bond fan? That same old jet pack was actually used in the movie Thunderball in 1965. See the attached photo of the stunt man ACTUALLY FLYING a real life jet pack. P.S. There are fans here that got into G.I. Joe and like the military aspect of it. There are other fans that like the sci-fi parts of it. Neither seem to agree or understand each others views on G.I. Joe. Not that they followed this but I think they should have, I always looked at the 80s ARAH Joes as a Tier One tip of the spear team like above SEAL Team 6 and Delta that got to use experimental weapons and tech because their missions were so difficult and fate of the world stuff. So the stories, writing, etc. should have been grounded in military reality but could stray off into sci-fi fantasy land for experimental weapons, tech, and science. But should be consistent and follow rules, ideas, and things based on real life. That makes a better story. The approach that many have of well it's fantasy or sci-fi so I don't have to follow any rules or base it on anything and can just make up anything as the story goes along makes for poor writing and story telling.
