Besides Captain America, Paramount themselves are coming out with a sequel to Top Gun, so they clearly think money can be made worldwide with America-centric films. I don't think the rest of the world hates America - or GI Joe - as much as people on Twitter would like us to believe.
I think that part of what makes today's films so dull and lifeless is too broad a target audience, too great a focus on international mass appeal. Imagine if in 1984 someone had told Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis to make New York less important an element to Ghostbusters, fearing it would alienate Midwesterners or something. Or if someone had told John Hughes in 1986 that Ferris Bueller's Day Off would only appeal to people from Chicago. As for looking new and different, the trailer doesn't really look a lot different than most other films these days sadly. I can't see a lot to pull in people who aren't familiar with the brand. As far as GI Joe being a nearly dead brand, so was Marvel before Iron Man in 2008. I really wish they'd done an old school action movie with Snake Eyes, Scarlett and Stalker on a rescue operation or something. They could have run into Storm Shadow and a bunch of Cobra Troopers, and filled in the back story more subtly. It really would be unique, because there's not a lot of real old school action movies being made these days. Last edited by SnowCat; 05-20-2021 at 10:22 PM.. |

I don't think I'd want GI Joe that dark, as I generally prefer Joe a bit more fun, but dang, Tears of the Sun is hugely underrated. Such a good movie.

Also Captain America was part of a growing cinematic universe, so unless Hasbro and Paramount are going to put Bumblebee and Snake-Eyes in the same universe the best thing we can hope for is that tge movie is decent and makes enough money for a better sequel. You do know that in some of those countries Captain America was renamed simply the 'Avenger" right? The movie wasn't portrayed as a 2 hour army recruitment video and that would be the problem with a fan pleasing G.I.Joe movie, it would just be seen as American propaganda. The thing the Team America movie made fun of.

So GI Joe can stay American, just call GI Joe films Action Force or Commandos Em Acao or whatever overseas. Problem solved.

...That doesn't see any resemblance to a G.I. Joe franchise here? I mean the trailer for Snake Eyes, could have been renamed "Ninja Gaiden" and no one would bat an eye. Looks like the standard run of the mill shoot'em up with no relation to the fandom it's trying to covet. The character spends the whole movie trailer with his mask off; no look at Storm shadow 'cept a wide shot of someone without a mask wearing white.
I hate to be pessimistic. Thoughts?

Somehow I don’t think Action Force would ever be the title overseas though, the name Action Force pretty much disappeared I think in 1991 or something? Been nothing but GI Joe since!

Yep. I was just demonstrating that the name change argument actually works in favor of not watering down the actual film itself. I thought it would be fun to pull two from GI Joe's past. (I think Vala owns the rights to the Action Force name right now anyway.)

Ooh right, yeah SnowCat your right Vala does own that name now, would be cool though the name change like the film Breakin’ is called Breakdancing in the UK, Live Free or Diehard is called Diehard 4.0, Avengers is Avengers Assemble etc. Action Force: Snake Eyes Origins has a bell to it :P
