Thank you! People keep forgetting that GI Joe canon has been all over the place since the beginning. Also let's not forget Larry Hama himself played a role in the creation of this new origin story and that Henry Golding stresses in most of his recent interviews how he is trying to honor Larry's comics (hence him using the classic uzi and not other weapons like how newer depictions of SE typically use)
Everyone is trying to gain momentum off of the 80's fans but try to put their own new spin on the franchise the distances themselves from the source material and case after case this proves to be folly. The most successful franchise/world to date is the Marvel Universe because while things/themes are updated for a modern world, they never stray too far from the establishing storyline/themes/background of the universe they are dramatizing. |

Who knows, I'm just going to watch the movie itself and judge then, I haven't even watched the trailer, I've pulled back from GI Joe until then, it's the last fandom I participate in at all, but still, too much else going on.
Just waiting for GI Joe to get fun again, at the very least.

Yes the canon is all over the place, but let's not forget; every incarnation from the previous live action films, Renegades storyline, Valor Vs Venom and Sigma 6, have all used the 80's characters as their basis and none have garnered the success as the 80's run. Similarly, the toys since the 25th anniversary, 40th anniversary and now Classifieds line, again, are all based off the 80's run.
The Leader - Duke The Lancer -Ripcord/Flint The Smart Guy - Breaker/Tunnel Rat The Big Guy - Roadblock/Heavy Duty The Action Girl -Scarlett/Lady Jaye The Lone Wolf - Snake Eyes The characters in newer media usually only share the codenames with the ARAH versions. Larry hard setting the ARAH comic around the Vietnam War means some character backgrounds have to be altered or ignored to tell modern stories. TBH Snake Eyes is the only Joe character to have a fully fleshed-out backstory in the first place. Every other character with any extra backstory is based on how they are related to SE's past. Marvel literally had to create a new Ultimates comic universe to base the MCU on. The MCU made a lot of changes to the backgrounds of characters from their classic comic origins. One big example is Thor. They got rid of his alter-ego as Donald Blake, the medical doctor with the enchanted cane. You have Wanda and Quicksilver without any mention of mutants.

I don't get the G.I.Joe vibe at all. I am disappointed in the casting of Snake Eyes. I like Henry Golding and have watched in movies before. I just don't see him as Snake Eyes, but that's because I grew up with Larry Hama's version of Snake Eyes.
However, I felt the same way about the first few Transformers movies. They could have been any generic alien transforming robots cause they looked nothing like the vintage ones I've grown up with. At least with this new Joe movie, the costumes can pass off as similar to the original ones with a modernized twist. I think that was the main thing I hated about ROC. Other than Snake Eyes, no one had any of the trademark vintage outfit looks.

The storyline may be different but both the comic and cartoon were about an ensemble cast of soldiers. It was about the group and not the individual. That's my biggest grip about how the Hasbro franchises have dramatized on screen. But my complaint about the trailer isn't even about the singular focused on one individual: it's the complete restructuring of SE's mythos into something more shoe horned to fit a basic (and lazy) story telling of the character. SE identity was mysterious. Sure we got some glimpses of him in the comics but look how far in the run we actually saw his face? I believe it was like issue 98 in the Hama run. And the earlier images were hidden behind some big aviator shades and tucked behind face bandages. SE donned the mask from issue 1 and if fans stuck around long enough the McGuffin would be finally revealed. I have an issue with this whole movie showing his face prominently. Much like Joe 1 did with Destro and Storm Shadow and Joe 2 did with Firefly. The mystic behind these characters is completely stolen; if this movie won't replicate the core themes that make the character loved by fans, they why play on the fan base? Of course it's a cash grab but it also allows for some out of the gate hatred further down the line. A perfect example of this logic can be seen in the Disney Star Wars trilogy; it looks nothing like the Lucas era trilogies and the backlash is ruthless.
TMNT (the very first live action movie) borrowed elements from the cartoon while marrying the basic story of the comic and I fathom that if polled, it ranks the highest of any TMNT movie. Similarly, Transformer Fans hold the original animated movie higher than any of the live action movies. And I see it purely because these outings stood closest to the source material they were based on. This movie may be a good movie but will it be a good JOE movie? If you grew up on ARAH, I'm thinking no. Not based off the trailer we've seen If this was a real Gi Joe Snake-Eyes origin movie, you'd have Stalker, Snake-Eyes, and Storm Shadow serving in the US Military updated for modern times in Iraq or Afghanistan on a mission where Snake-Eyes saves everyone, Storm Shadow rescues him, and in the aftermath goes to train with Storm Shadow. And you'd see the original outfit, not V2. |

If they movie creators wanted to create archetype characters, why rely on the brand name? Because it's a money grab. Joe has a built in fanbase; why not just created a movie that exudes the themes and stories of the franchise they are based on? Quote:
Not true. Sure his character got the most shine in the comics, but several episodes of the cartoon have provided back story on many of the individual Joes. The only major changes between the cartoon and comic are: Cobra Commander's background and Duke-Scarlett- Snake Eyes love triangle (which would make an interesting b-storyline). |

Duke loving scarlet is a conspiracy in itself put forth by the higher ups to get Snake Eyes into a emotional stupor for he goes and kills a bunch of things ala that time scarlet was hurt and went nuts.

I’m reserving judgement and imma go see it. If anything, it’ll be a nice change of pace to finally get out to the movies again.
