No, you're not the only one that feels that way, if you read literally every single movie-related thread here, you will find many, many posts saying the same exact thing.
I personally prefer to withhold judgement until I've seen the film.

Predator:
Dutch = Duke Dillon = Stalker Mac = Roadblock Blain = Rock 'N Roll Poncho = Tripwire Billy = Spirit Hawkins = Breaker It's pretty obvious this was influenced by GI Joe and the Sunbow cartoon series. An elite team of mercenaries/Special Ops team goes into the jungle for what is supposed to be a rescue mission. Instead, the mission turns into a Sci-Fi adventure where the team battles the Predator/alien. Totally like a Sunbow episode. |

Hasbro keeps dropping the ball.
What do the Marvel movies have in common? The costumes look like the source-material and the stories of the heroes are similar to the comic books. Snake-Eyes was in the military and then studied martial arts. But we get a different story yet again for the movies. The only movie close to anything Gi Joe we've ever gotten was Predator.

GI Joe is a brand like Transformers. They use it to make people realize what it is. Without it people would think the movie is a reboot of a movie that came out in the 90's that starred Nick Cage. They would have thought Bumblebee without the transformers moniker out front and not seeing a trailer would have thought it was a documentary about a flying insect that stings.

Different media, it will happen. The G.I. Joe cartoon in 1985 and the Marvel Comic in 1985 in no way were similar.

Thank you! People keep forgetting that GI Joe canon has been all over the place since the beginning. Also let's not forget Larry Hama himself played a role in the creation of this new origin story and that Henry Golding stresses in most of his recent interviews how he is trying to honor Larry's comics (hence him using the classic uzi and not other weapons like how newer depictions of SE typically use)

The storyline may be different but both the comic and cartoon were about an ensemble cast of soldiers. It was about the group and not the individual. That's my biggest grip about how the Hasbro franchises have dramatized on screen. But my complaint about the trailer isn't even about the singular focused on one individual: it's the complete restructuring of SE's mythos into something more shoe horned to fit a basic (and lazy) story telling of the character. SE identity was mysterious. Sure we got some glimpses of him in the comics but look how far in the run we actually saw his face? I believe it was like issue 98 in the Hama run. And the earlier images were hidden behind some big aviator shades and tucked behind face bandages. SE donned the mask from issue 1 and if fans stuck around long enough the McGuffin would be finally revealed. I have an issue with this whole movie showing his face prominently. Much like Joe 1 did with Destro and Storm Shadow and Joe 2 did with Firefly. The mystic behind these characters is completely stolen; if this movie won't replicate the core themes that make the character loved by fans, they why play on the fan base? Of course it's a cash grab but it also allows for some out of the gate hatred further down the line. A perfect example of this logic can be seen in the Disney Star Wars trilogy; it looks nothing like the Lucas era trilogies and the backlash is ruthless.
TMNT (the very first live action movie) borrowed elements from the cartoon while marrying the basic story of the comic and I fathom that if polled, it ranks the highest of any TMNT movie. Similarly, Transformer Fans hold the original animated movie higher than any of the live action movies. And I see it purely because these outings stood closest to the source material they were based on. This movie may be a good movie but will it be a good JOE movie? If you grew up on ARAH, I'm thinking no. Not based off the trailer we've seen |
