The people who like it I think will like anything.
Talk points. CGI-Since it is such a critical portion of the film, why did thy skimp out so badly on it? The desert and FLAGG scenes were so eagerly anticipated and they fumbled the ball badly in that you can tell it is computer. That screws up a great deal of suspension of disbelief for me. Baroness-She is originally was a European. Hasblo hired an English actress. Why not let her speak with her native accent? Why this big charade? The Borg nanoprobes (I say Borg because this is where this idea was introduced first;in Star Trek) were used from everything from the destruction of the Eiffell Tower, to Zartans unique abilities, to Destros Face. Snake Eyes needs to get some to fix his face. They hired a Korean to play a Japanese man. If I were Japanese I would be offended. Furthermore, they had to use a lip sink artist to dub over his lines so we could understand him. No one seems to care accept for me but I have to say they are pushing a social agenda with this movie. It was all talk about Euros and NATO and the UN. Nothing about the US military. This is in contrast with Transformers which showcased the US military. Transformers shows the very best of the US military and the government goes head over heals to help out. Joe did not have that. They didn't even have NATO help! I will say the show was entertaining but there are far superior modern action films out there. Take "Live Free or Die Hard" that was an awesome show. I enjoyed Watchan immensely. V for Vendetta had alot of great martial arts scenes as well. Why can't Hasblo get Bruce Willis or Jason Statham? Snake Eyes-I have seen almost every martial art movie ever made and I have to say Sommers does not know how to make a great martial arts fight. There were so many jump cuts and whatnot that I could tell there wasn't much choreography to it. In the faraway shots, you could see how they were doing their moves slowly(carefully). Maybe the intention was to speed it up later in post production but it didn't show. I read a site with Ray Park and he was quoted as doing a break dance routine to kind pay homage to the old cartoon. They cut that scene out! Pissed me off. I'd like to see Ray Park break dance. Gads, I don't want to ramble. I am trying to make point by point critiques. I can accept the character and plot reshuffling. In order to make a movie like this with a wealth of material, you have to cut corners. However, I feel they didn't do their homework. It seems they got some Masters Thesis students who are working on the crew and they told them to make a Cliff's notes version of G.I.Joe. They breezed through the material and this is what you get. Abject disappointment. The action was just so computerized. Everything was. I figure they used alot of blue room shots. That is fine. George Lucas did a great job with the computers. Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith was spectacular. The CGI ships and battles look so real I could scrape the paint off of the star destroyers! I remember when they redid the original Star Wars films with "new and improved" special defects. It was god awful! Computers have com along way in those 13 years but in G.I.Joe they did not apply those lessons. The CGI was obvious. The argument at the time in 1997 was CGI was going to be the new cheap way of doing things and it was better than model building. That is true but you have to apply great care to do CGI correctly. This film literally used SciFi Network quality stuff. I was offended. This film leaves much to be desired. As more points come up I will post it.

After reading all the reviews coming in, I am happy I stuck to my guns and did not waste a dime on this movie. At this point I just have no desire to see it at all. I'll probably buy it on DVD when I find it in the $5 bin at Wal Mart though.

I want to see the Alternate Version.
There must be an Alternate Version, because I see people in other threads raving about how "wonderful" it was and "How much they loved it". I now must question my own sanity, because either those people are stark-raving lunatics, or I am. Or there must be another version of this movie I haven't seen. I rank this piece of garbage LOWER than the Masters of the Universe movie. I can't believe it! This is as good as it is going to get. All I can say is instead of writing on here, we need to write letters to Hasblo. A letter writing campaign is the only way they are going to really listen because then it will be a matter of physical record. Hasbros address: Hasbro, Inc 1027 Newport Ave Pawtucket, RI 02861 Please write them not matter how terrible of a writer you might be. Just try to articulate why you believe it is bad. Tell them to do better. With any luck, a couple thousand people will write in and hopefully the next film will be better. Remember that spooch film Phantom Menace? It did get better in the next 2 movies. Lets gun for that but we need to write and let them know. Thanks!

Furthermore, I just want to add one final comment to this. They reshuffled all kinds of stuff. Yet in the end, I can't say it is any better. As I said previously, they have to have creative control to fit stuff into a 2 hour space. However, I can't say it is any better like this as opposed to how things were in the comics or cartoon.
I really just think they slapped this thing together. Those college interns they had who slapped together their Cliff's notes on the Joe Verse did a bang up shitty job. They were in a time crunch due to the writers strike and I remember in a youtube video with the screen writer about how they were literally calling him at the set for lines. That is bad. That reminds me of the original 60s Star Trek. They would be in the middle of the shoot and Gene Roddenberry or some other writer was pumping pages out as they shot. That is not being prepared and not being responsible to what G.I.Joe could have been. Now it is just another crappy summer movie. I was hoping for better. I am channeling my frustrations and I am sending them to Hasblo. I humbly request everyone else who does not approve of this mess also write Hasbro and tell them why. Thanks again.

I sent a letter to Hollywood demanding they return my 2 hours, and I'm not paying for shipping.

realizing how many people are batshit crazy about gi joe, i'd love to see how star wars fans would react if they redid the 70's original 3 movies again. or better yet take the yuzan vong crap from the 80's and do that in a different approach. let people fraek out about all that stuff b/c it's not what they think it should be lol.

if this exact movie had been released 10 years earlier in 1999, it probably would have been slightly more deserving of some kudos, but this is 2009, and it just seems badly dated and cliched at the same time. if not for hasbro's involvement and sommers name on the director chair, this would have been straight to video release.
and so far, the critics on yahoo! movies have given this a D+; that's a fair assessment. not a total bomb, but very close. on the bright side, we should continue to get figures made for the next couple of years. now, can we get some more resolute? |

GI Joe: ROC is what happens when people who do not know or care about a license takes it over. They knew before the cameras even rolled what sort of movie they were going for and it showed in the final result:
A loud, fast movie with little plot or substance. I feel that the script was written in advance and the GI Joe license was attained later and slapped on. It would explain why things are so different than what any of us were expecting. The thing is? You can't blame Paramount. They accomplished their misson of making a movie. Who you can blame? Is Hasbro. Does Hasbro care so little for the Joe franchise that they don't care what people do to it? Now sure, you could argue "Well how much substance do you want from a movie based off a toy?", but the answer to that? I want the same effort the people behind Resolute and the 80's Marvel comic put forth - that's how much. They just didn't say "Screw this, let's just have one big fight scene after another. Who cares?", but rather they took the time to build drama, characterization, and a cohesive story - three things that ROC lacked. But all that matters is how much money was made. How much money did they snooker out of us the fans who buy the figures, and the naive movie going public going to see it on opening day. They knew the movie was garbage, that's why they didn't allow critics to see it despite what they say. They were hoping to draw in as many people as possible the first weekend before word got out that the movie blows. A poster asked why do we hate it? I don't hate it because it wasn't a straight up adaption of ARAH, I hate it because... 1. Lousy editting. The movie jumps too quickly and it feels spastic. Like it has tourette syndrome. 2. Bad acting. Quaid, Tatum, Nichols, and even the normally excellent Eccleston all turn in sub-par performances IMHO. It seemed the only person who was acting with gravitas was JGL. 3. Some really dodgy SFX. Destro's lumpy head, is all that needs to be said. 4. Paper-thin plotting. The whole movie can be summed up in four words: "Who got the warheads?!" 5. Advance technology being used as a Deus Ex Machina. Need to destroy the Eiffel Tower? Blame it on the nanomites! Need to create a bunch of super-soldiers? Blame it on the nanomites! Need to heal burn wounds by creating a metal mask? Blame it on the nanomites! Want to control the mind of your sister? Blame it on the nanomites! Want to give someone shape-shifting abilites? Blame it on the nanomites! 6. Plot contrivance upon plot contrviance. If I were Duke? I would be crapping my pants because I would be sure the Universe is out to get me. I mean what are the chances that your ex-fiance with no prior combat experiance shows up and attacks your military convoy that you were leading? Then you learn that her brother, who died on yet another mission you were in charge of, turns out to be alive and is now the head of an evil para-military empire who has captured you and plans on making you one of their slaves? How does that do for reasons to hate this flick? Now yeah, some could argue that it's meant to be a fun action movie but still - compare ROC to films like Transporter 2, Crank, or Die Hard and you'll see a difference. Those movies were fun to watch - GI Joe simply isn't. After the initial thrill of seeing Snake-Eyes and company on screen wears off? What are you left with? 100% pure dreck. I mean, if this movie had nothing at all to do with GI Joe? Would you have even bothered with it? Or claimed to have enjoyed it? The truly tragic part is that while yes, this movie was meant to be another generation's GI Joe. It's just a damn shame they saw GI Joe at one of it's low points. There would have been so many better ways to introduce new fans to the concept of a shadowy special ops team whose presence is only known to a few, and their never-ending battle with a ruthless band of terrorists. And that's how I feel about, and now you know. |

Let the hate flow over you!
It's nice seeing it all in one place. I was going to see it this weekend but a little appendicitis got in the way.. so maybe I'll see it at a matinee during the week. I don't have super high hopes.
