Paramount Under Friendly Fire With G.I. Joe
29 July 2009 3:39 PM, PDT Paramount, which has been facing some tough challenges at the box office this year, is facing one of its biggest ones with the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which is due to be released on Aug. 7. USA Today reported today (Wednesday) that buzz surrounding the film has been brutal, with fans complaining loudly at what the studio offered in its trailers for the movie. "The script was hurried into production to beat the writers' strike last year, which may account for some of the troubles," the newspaper observed. Alex Billington of FirstShowing.net suggests that the studio's efforts to protect the movie may have achieved the opposite result. For example, it will only be shown to critics next week, just days before its release. "Never a good sign," he remarked. Billington said that every time he mentioned the movie on his blog, "the comments would fill up with people already saying, 'This looks like the worst movie of the year.'" PreviousNext |

This sounds pretty shady to me... Paramount had a huge box office with Transformers 2 (even if it was slaughtered by the critics).
And most of the buzz I've heard lately on GI Joe has been pretty positive. Granted a month or two ago nearly everyone hated this movie, but I think they've been turning that around lately and people are getting genuinely excited. As for myself, I absolutely loathe some of the changes they have made (Marlon Wayans, Breaker), but look forward to the parts I will enjoy (Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow). |

good reviews from people that have actually seen it hold a little more weight than "brutal buzz" claims from 'Industry Insiders' Still, neither one of them make-up my mind for me. I'll have to do that myself after I see it.

Does not change the fact that there is a lot of people who not happy with what thay have done..if that buzz is not handle right it can be a bad thing for them..I will still bee seeing it but my expectations are so far gone it is more of a study to see how other react in the movie more than to see it itself. I think that will prove to be profound at how well it is or is not working.

This looks to be the most highly publicized movie of the year!

This bit:
'This looks like the worst movie of the year.'" Well, yeah. People have been saying that on this forum for ages, whereas people who have actually SEEN the film say otherwise. Sadly, the haters will continue to believe the groundless vitriol...

From the reviews we are seeing, it seems less that Paramount is "protecting" this movie as FINISHING this movie. EVERY review seems to mention the incomplete CGI and some editing that could still be done. I think it is a race to the release date for the production team. I think the USA Today article is being widely attacked by the entertainment industry. When a studio really is trying to protect a movie, it NEVER shows it for the critics. There have been quite a few of those in recent years. This is not one of them. Two or three days early is quite enough to get a review written.

I don't care much, as I am taking my kids and whatever friends they want to invite opening weekend. We are all going to wear our Joe tshirts (Ok, mine is a cobra shirt that they gave me last year for father's day)
