Same here -- I was pretty firmly anti-ROC, but now I'm WAY on board. Each clip looks more and more fun. I'll eat crow happily, I don't care. If this movie is as decent as I'm reading it is, then rock on.

Yeah, I've been fairly divided on the issue (always planned on seeing it, but I thought the Superbowl trailer was terrible). After not seeing much in the way of media for a while, I've liked the recent commercials quite a bit more.

Interesting thoughts as I'm going the other way. The more I see of the film, the more convinced I become that it will be a fun ride, despite being a re-imagining of the Joe Universe. I don't know how many people have skimmed the latest review on Ain't It Cool News (beware of spoilers!!!), but that gave me further hope that we're getting a fun movie and something that will be embraced and help to carry on the brand. Sure - I don't know that I will like every character's look in the movie, but I also don't know that I would have liked seeing them try to recreate Cobra Commander's comic-based look in the movie. I have a feeling it would have come off looking pretty silly. Maybe I'll feel the same way about his new look - but if that is my biggest complaint then I'm probably pretty happy with the new film.

Kinda playing a devil's advocate here but....when did the Joes use their "skills" in the comics or cartoons?
Don't they pretty much just shoot at Cobra? Snow Job is there in the artic missions. Recondo in the jungle, etc. But what specific skills are we talking about? In the cartoon, there were no real specific roles for any character. Everyone could drive any vehicle. Nobody seemed to have a specific role. Heck, Spirit was their martial artist. In ROC, Snake-Eyes is obviously using his ninja skills. Heavy Duty is firing big weapons (that's a skill, right?). Breaker is their tech guy. Scarlett uses her crossbow and stealth suit (she's covert ops, right?). Based on what we're seeing, it looks like they're using their skills which sometimes are gear-based. But isn't our military pretty much gear-based, anyway? CC's design does suck. There's no denying it. However, he only looks like that at the end. We can hope that he'll look better in the sequel, but they have years to fix that design. I'm getting more excited with each clip and review posted. I think ROC just seemed the obvious project to jump on and bash for a lot of people. Now that footage is being shown, a lot of us are realizing it might not be bad. Sure, it doesn't look exactly like the Joes we grew up. We can either shelter ourselves and not accept the movie. Or we can realize it's a different beast and try to get some enjoyment out of it. It exists. Deal with it either way. |

The plots of most cartoons eps and issues of the comics were slightly ridiculous. With that I can go ahead and accept nanites and accelerator suits. But if there's too much humor for live action, that's when I can't call it GI Joe.

for me i expect the movie to suck i mean it's hollywood and they don't have a good record in bringing these kinds of things to life all i ask is that they make it better than street fighter. in a franchise like this or transformers for me its how well the movie toy looks that causes me the grief i.e. both tf movie toys suck. the joe line at first didn't seem so bad but as i had cover girl in my hand today i couldn't do it the desire wasn't there (maybe it was the blue uniform or the stupid accessory's that id badge or that bfg idk) even tho my whole reason to get cover girl is to turn her into a custom @%$#@* the toy it self made me uninspired dont get me wrong i love the new shipwreck and i think this is the best baroness every made well my drunken point is this movie line isn't as bad as tf but it isn't that great so far although some figures look awesome

For me, i think its looking better with the more previews.. They seem to be holding back a lot about cobra commander or showing too much, which is nice.

I have been a staunch supporter Rise of Cobra from the beginning. Whenever anyone slammed the movie, I jumped in to defend it without reservation, stating that we shouldn't judge the movie until we actually see it. And I still feel this way.
However, I have to admit that I'm losing more and more faith with each clip or trailer released. My biggest gripe is that it seems to be more about the tech and less about skills. This is possibly just due to the filmmakers using the flashiest aspects to construct the trailers, but it's not doing the film any favors. It feels like the filmmakers have said, "we just need a bunch of Matrix-like stunts; to hell with the skills of the characters." I hope I'm wrong. My other major gripe is that they completely made Cobra Commander look like a joke. How could they go wrong with him? Is it really that hard to modernize his hooded or helmeted look? Both of those looked fine and could have been easily translated to a different medium. But instead, they decided to make him look like a laughable goon. Minor gripes include the homogenization of Zartan (why take one of the most distinctive-looking characters and strip him of that), Marlon Wayans (I held out hopes that he'd be doing some serious acting, but it looks to be in vein), and Baroness being so naive as to think that Snake-Eyes gave up during the big car chase scene). I'm trying to be optimistic still, but it's becoming more difficult all the time. |

It doesn't matter anymore. good or bad reviews/previews, I know I'll be there with many hisstankers watching it. I'm going in there not to try to analyze every detail or say they should have done it like this or they shouldn't have done that, but just to enjoy the ride - it'll work better that way. At worst, I'll lose the $10 for admission - in which case, I'd just buy a few less Joes to compensate But if you live in AZ, $10 to escape the summer heat for a couple of hours is a pretty good deal.
