Marvel hinted that GI Joe was in the Marvel Universe on so many different levels. In an early issue, there are references to the Hulk and Thor. Also, since GI Joe and Transformers shared a universe and Spider-Man appeared in Transformers, then there's the natural assumption that all three share the same universe. Then in a later issue one of Metal Head's rocket launchers says "Stark Industries" around the lense.
So, yeah, I think GI Joe of the original Marvel run was definitely a part of the Marvel Universe. Jason A few. But most aren't. And even those that are are usually heightened to a level where even if the comics say they're not superhuman they're actually superhuman if you look at the things they do. Part of GI Joe's appeal was the humanity of and to an extent realism of the story (at least in the Hama series). If a Joe got hurt, he or she was usually shown as out of commission for the next few issues while they healed. In superhero comics, unless they decide to make it a specific plot point for a story arc or two, most heroes are back up to 100 percent by the next issue (or next story arc), to say nothing of simply shrugging off many of the types of injuries Joes would get fairly frequently all the time. It's like having a GI Joe team that's nothing but a few hundred Snake-Eyes or Storm Shadows (two characters who along with Zartan and maybe Firefly and a few others start to reach the point where they'd fit in reasonably well as low-level superheroes/villains). Could a determined writer or group of writers make it work? Sure. It's not really a question of "could." It's more a question of "should." What does GI Joe really add to the Marvel Universe beyond an opportunity for the Joe franchise to make more money? As someone pointed out in (I think) the very first response in this thread: Why would the people in charge of the MCU want GI Joe in their universe? What does it bring to the table that they aren't already getting? Is anyone on these forums not watching the MCU or buying any product for it specifically because of the lack of GI Joe? I rather doubt it (and if they were, I'd...kinda think they were mildly insane). Last edited by Jmacq1; 07-19-2019 at 12:24 PM.. |

Well, that doesn't make any sense. I don't understand how they can backtrack that GI Joe was never part of the "main" Marvel Universe when one of Metal Head's rocket launchers clearly says "Stark Industries" and all the other references mentioned on this thread. But then again, I guess Marvel introduced a "multi-verse" concept of explaining all the different comic titles/runs of the same character the way DC used the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" to explain theirs.
Jason But basically it boils down to this: The Spider-Man in Transformers was not the normal Spider-Man of the Marvel Universe...he was the Spider-Man of the Transformers universe. The JJJ that appears in GI Joe was the same way. The "GI Joe" that appears in Spider-Man wasn't really GI Joe...just had a guy that really looked a lot like Duke). And the "Stark Industries" would fall into the same category. There might be a Stark Industries but it's not run by Tony Stark, or it IS but that Tony Stark isn't Iron Man (Maybe in the Joe verse Stalker, Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow rescued him in Vietnam before he became Iron Man!). Yes, it's confusing, but it's clear Marvel wanted to (poorly) make it known that GI Joe was not part of the Marvel Universe. Possibly because it being so would bring up some of the same story/logic problems we've discussed in this very thread! (Also the Stark Industries thing makes not even a little bit of sense given Metal Head was an Iron Grenadier...who works for a major weapons manufacturer...but I digress) |

Ironically, it's implied that Rom and the Micronauts are still part of the Marvel Universe
