Stephen Sommers is/was a good director. After all he did the The Mummy series. But to answer your question yes. The JOEs could be as popular as the MCU. As a matter of fact G.I. JOE has all the elements in place to be the next great American film franchise.

That is the problem , they don’t want an American franchise everybody wants a global franchise.

They could be, however, Marvel had 50+ years of a huge pop culture presence, and a MASSIVE fan base before the Cinematic Universe was even attempted.
Star Wars is one of the biggest franchises of all times, and its non-core movies have struggled lately to the point of many being put on hold. DC has a similar scale to Marvel, and because they tried to go all-in to start, and didn't have a great product to do it, is kinda the laughing stock. G.I. Joe was a huge brand for all of about 10 years (ARAH), and has had spurts of limited popularity since. Going all-in in a Marvel model will lead to disaster. A much better model for G.I. Joe to follow would be something along the lines of Game of Thrones. A medium-to-high budget TV series of one hour episodes that focuses heavily on the characters, their motivations, includes a focus on espionage and smaller engagements, and has a couple or three major set piece battles/engagements each season. |

It is just my opinion just like it is your opinion. The Mummy franchise is all that he has under his belt of note. Just check his IMDB page. The original was ok 58 on Rotten Tomatoes and Scorpion King only scores a 38. To be fair though he only wrote Scorpion and did not direct. Before that he did Van Helsing which is an OK movie but he had two (now) huge stars in the cast (Jackman and Beckinsale) and it only gets a 57 percent. He also wrote that one. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/van_helsing What is needed is for someone to convince Paramount (or another company please) that Joe is worthy of higher quality directors and writers and time to hash out a brilliant script and not something that needs to be handed in quickly. They see it as a "toy movie" that will get them quick cash. GIJOE has some pretty rich source material to tell stories in the theater. THey don't see the opportunity, or they choose to spend resources elsewhere. broken record beat horse.

A medium-to-high budget TV series of one hour episodes that focuses heavily on the characters, their motivations, includes a focus on espionage and smaller engagements, and has a couple or three major set piece battles/engagements each season. But, Joe Q was smart. He leveraged the popularity of Spider-Man and Wolverine and rolled them into the Avengers comics (which was controversial and against form), did various things like Iron Spider which conjoined the characters, and the Ultimates was a big focus of the company which basically relaunched the original Avengers as a brand. This set up key storylines like the Avengers focused Planet Hulk and Civil War. (Notice how it was an Avenger who killed the mutants in House of M). Then they established Marvel Studios which built on this success and Iron Man and was an unexpected smash hit. Iron Man was not a guaranteed hit, several of the superhero movies preceding it had not performed particularly well actually. But the MCU structure was built for ~10 years before the first movie even came out, brick by brick. It was the launching pad. GI Joe is effectively a tarnished Marvel Brand. Could it be resurrected? There is no strength to leverage, but the IP has legs. Hasbro just needs to rebuild it step by step. I wonder, Could Hama and Jim Shooter work together as consultants? Do they still have anything to offer for something of this scope? Last edited by Adventure Fun; 05-30-2019 at 09:36 PM.. |
