Strike three I'm out. I had such high hopes for this.
The 1980s Marvel run outsold superhero titles!!!!! You know those new movies setting records one after another like the 1920s Yankees?! G.I. Joe outsold them!!!! Why does Hollywood think they car write it better? There is even a huge tend in 1980 period films now too. This movie may be a cool film, I love old Kung Fu films, but it sure as shit isn't Snake Eyes. Ray Park can count himself lucky.

I think it is due to the masks they wear in the fighting festival. That way they can foreshadow the SE masked character before he becomes that character. Pretty lame, but it could be visually interesting.
As to Japanese Ninja hijinx, here is a little secret, even though "Asians" are kind grouped together in the US of A, there are actually very deep rifts between the countries/cultures. If the Boston Hasbro/Lorenzo geniuses think they can target the PRC market with Land of the Rising Sun adventure, let me inform them- the PRC has an extreme dislike, nay, a riotous loathing for Nippon. If the profitability of the movie is dependent on the PRC market, well then, we will indeed have the True Death of the Joe Line.

Not feeling it. Bubbling like they’re gonna blow it again. I’m not mad, just... disappointed.

In the summer of 2017, I certainly caught flak from some on this forum for my theory “Why the next GI Joe film will fail”. If these latest script rumors are true, then my previous thoughts (which received much criticism) will read like the quatrains of Nostradamus.
My best advice: Instead of retelling the story of Street Fighter, call Larry Hama and get him involved with this film, pronto!

Hama isn’t a screenwriter and has no understanding of how to tell a story in that medium; he can barely tell a story in comic book form.
This movie is going to fail because it’s starting with a lame idea that doesn’t capture the basic essence of Snake Eyes history. Larry Hama would just write a terrible movie that may or may it capture that essence considering he has never felt any obligation to continuity with any previously created story element. Just hire someone who can deconstruct the most interesting aspect of SE’s history and reconstruct it within a new story that is interesting. But his being skilled in martial arts and being friends with Storm Shadow isn’t it. |

Just copy the Matrix. Even the bad sequels of the original Matrix still did extremely well in the B.O.
Example: Snake Eyes = Neo Storm Shadow = Morpheus Jinx = Trinity Follow the same basic forumula... Also, HK style Martial Arts with Guns is still a very marketable concept. What kind of idiot Director could possibly "mess up" this Snake Eyes movie?????? They would have to by trying to do precisely that! |

Actually Scarlett would be a good Trinity character here.
You could shoehorn a "love scene" before Snake Eyes gets his face melted off later on! |

People expecting them to make an 80's military movie are kidding themselves. The whole point is to sell toys to kids, Hasbro doesn't care about the tiny 40-50 year old male fanbase who has mostly moved away from buying toys. They need to make a toyetic movie that will move mass product, 80's R-rated action film style Joes is never happening.
Divergent movies are based on young adult books. The books and movies were made for teenagers. News articles have recently been saying that digital games stunt children's growth and that parents should return to analogue puzzles and toys anyways, so there's still a chance action figures could be popular amongst kids. That's why there's so many retro wooden board games around this xmas. The reason GI Joe doesn't sell as well as Hasbro wants, is because places like Toys R Us (still have it here in Canada) copy and steal the idea for their generic modern forces lineup so then there's three gi joe figures versus a whole aisle of blow molded crap with 5 POTA, lump-of-garbage figures for $13. If only Hasbro could have somehow sued them but they only did that in the 1960s. So we're stuck with Chinese rip off crap instead of brand name Joes. GI Joe is de facto advertising for these knock off lines. Designs like Adventure Time are easier to maintain control over and they appeal to both boys and girls. Look at shows like Hey Arnold! its easy to just animate a new episode and hire the original voice actors back. It wouldn't be impossible. They have those dreadful Transformers cartoons on youtube with Mark Hamill in them so they could definitely do something. I think Battleship with the names changed would have been a far superior movie as GI Joe to the two we got. The second movie had RZA doing the same exact voice over from Afro Samurai, his tv show, it started halfway through the film and was completely out of place. (Snake eyes isn't black..? Afro Samurai was..) The entire Asian Joe storyline is lifted part and parcel from the original Iron Fist comics which Hama also helped to write. Just sayin, that Iron Fist show did so badly with PC complainers that they cancelled the entire Netflix Marvel lineup. So why would the same exact story but with snake eyes do any better? PS - why is sci fi now 'made' for teens? Because the protagonists are young? I see absolutely no reason an intelligent adult cannot enjoy Hunger Games. |
