Troynos, after reading through this thread, I have to whole heartedly agree with you. Excellent debating skills and well put.

Everyone keeps comparing RoC to Sigma Six. I just don't see it. Calling the A-suits and Reactive Armor as "Sigma Suits". How is that arrived at? Sigma Six didn't have matching outfits, they didn't have armor on. There was an armor-like look to some of the characters outfits, but most of 'em were in stylized outfits much like the ARAH guys.
I don't see the comparasions.

Chalk me up as one who hated that they intertwined Snake-Eyes and Cobra Commander so much. I could handle CC's brother killing SE's family. Fine. It's a coincedence. I liked how SE and SS were intertwined. And I can even accept Zartan as part of that story. But then they shoehorned Firefly in there and did that Classified mini which was just terrible.
Regarding Ripcord....it's just a name. They're not going to use Stalker as a codename in their mass audience movie. It has too many negative connotations with it in our society. So they used the name Ripcord. He's not the same character. Same name, big deal. Yeah, he had a storyline in the comics. But he's not a major player. Hell, he doesn't even have a personality. For those so dear to him, please tell us what makes him so unique and interesting personality-wise? I don't mind having different continuities. Sure it would great if the cartoons and comics all followed the same continuity. It's a little late for that. While GI Joe has been floating around for a long time, the general public isn't aware of any of the storylines. Why not start over from scratch, so everyone can be all aboard? My biggest gripe with the new continuity is the comic relaunch. With a huge movie coming out, Hasbro should have made the comics follow the movie storyline. Having multiple continuities in the comics might be too confusing for people coming aboard with the movie. Who knows, though? Maybe the market will be big enough for movie and comic continuities in both the toylines and funnybooks? |

Shouldn't today's fans get their own versions of the characters? Shouldn't new fans be able to grasp onto new stories and develop the connection that we have with our stories?
Why does Joe, 25 years later, have to follow the same tracks that we had as kids? Doesn't today's generation deserve, and shouldn't they be allowed, to have the chance to create their own stories? Look, if you change what took a property 25 years to establish, then it is a facimilie of that product. Would Star Trek have been half as successful if they changed characters names? Designs of the ships, costumes, etc. This might be a rock'n movie, just call it something other than G.I. Joe. Cuz joe it ain't.

But they have changed Star Trek, numerous times, some successful, some not. At it's core it's been Star Trek (like at it's core, RoC is G.I. Joe) but there have been different versions: Next Generation, Enterprise, Voyager, etc..

If they took a "RESOLUTE" approach I think people would have been buch more accepting.

But Joe doesn't have the "history" to draw from that Star Trek does. Both franchises took the same approach, it's just Trek (being in the future) was able to set it's new series far into the future. Joe's kind of grounded in the present and couldn't take that approach.
So their approach was to make a new continuity with similar characters so there was some connection to everything that came before. Instead of the Kirk vs Picard debates, we'll have ARAH Duke vs RoC Duke debates.

I don't have a problem with ROC, ROC is made for kids. This looks like a kids film. Don't waste your time over thinking it. I probably would have loved this if it came out when I was a kid in the 80's. The way I see it Hasbro gave us Resolute to say thanks for growing up and still loving GI Joe. I just hope Hasbro works some more Resolute into the movie toy waves.

I think this thread is one of the more thought provoking threads about TROC than the usual TROC bashing threads out there. The thing with the GI Joe property is... there is no "George Lucas" looking over the entire franchise. Gene Roddenberry didn't own Star Trek, but Paramount allowed him to look after their franchise. GI Joe for good or bad, belongs to Hasbro... a corporate entity. It would have been nice if Hasbro gave the franchise to Larry Hama to oversee... but they haven't. There's been many incarnations of GI Joe. The 60's version, ARAH, Sigma Six. Does anyone remember GI Joe Extreme? If Hasbro doesn't reinvent GI Joe every so often... well the franchise will perish with it's core audience stuck in nursing homes drooling over our toys. Also remember SE, Stalker, SS hooked up in Vietnam (according to the Marvel comic)... just how old can these characters be in the next 10, 20 years? |
