Well the Lettering maybe be for Hasbro or Mold or Master and the letter with numbers maybe for paint schemes. I still have a feeling that some of these figures may be "rejects".
To my knowledge, prototype is a single figure or called a master figure; there should not be more than one. So why is it it you go on E-bay and type GI Joe prototype over 300 figures show up and there are many copies of the same figure there? Example, the Blue Neo-viper has darker eyes then the ones I have seen for sale recently on E-bay. The Crimson Neo-viper and Elite viper has paint chips. May be a quality control issue and therefore is a reject. I have also noticed recently new fully painted figure called prototypes with marker lettering writings on the figures. I hope that someone is not just writing on figures out there for a sale. I just hope I did not pay a higher price for something that came out of the trash, when a clean fresh figure comes out on sale in July for around $7. ;) Last edited by Firefly007; 06-09-2009 at 04:57 PM.. |

i think there is more than one because i think there is more than one factory.
sure itz possible that employees are churning these out. itz also possible that there are a few master copies... maybe one for the paint department... one for marketing... etc.

Prototypes are generally, if the term is used correctly, a very limited early run. However, samples and test shots can be run in the dozens, maybe even hundreds. But they're not meant for general consumers. They're supposed to be for internal use and approval only. I'm sure they're considered "trash" by every suit at Hasbro, but "treasure" by any lower employee who knows they can fetch some $$$ on the secondary market.
After seeing a few others, I'm thinking "HM" and "HFE" stands for "Hasbro Malaysia" and "Hasbro Far East", referring to which facility they come out of. I'd really like one of the next q&A's to ask about what all the markings mean. |

I think we are in consensus over the marks on the shoulders for the manufacture (H) and plants (FE, M). What about the letter with a number usually located at the bottom of the jacket. It maybe referring to paint scheme, quality, or production number? I think for sure the unpainted figures are referred to as prototypes and the painted ones are first runs or test shot figures.
The first runs are usually discarded because of quality control issues such as mold lines, part defects, paint chips, or mispainted. Those that end up in cards fetch big $$$. Last edited by Firefly007; 06-10-2009 at 05:59 PM.. |
