For those of you who are bagging on the Rise Of Cobra toys, I have one thing to say. "Please buy them anyway." At least the ones you think are cool enough, or look like vintage counterparts, or figures unrelated to the movie (like the Night Force and Resolute figures that will be released on ROC cards). Our dollars make a statement to Hasbro.
Hasbro stated in the most recent Q&A, the success of the ROC line will determine if the 25th and Resolute figures will have a shot at continuing and how strong they continue. I can't afford a Pitt, but if I could, I'd get one for my son to play with and also so I could support the line so things like a new Flagg can be built. Think about this, for those who say they'd pay $250 for a Resolute Flagg, just buy the Pitt for $100 to support the line so you can get a Flagg in the future which will probably be around $150 anyway. I seriously doubt Hasbro will EVER make any toy that cost more than $150 until inflation pushes that limit. You are still going to pay about the same, AND you are almost ensuring that you will get what you want in the future. Just trade me the Hawk figure because I want it. I know MANY of you are, first of all, upset at the new look of the GIJOE movie, and second of all, ticked off at the look of the toys associated with that look, but think of this, we now have a new medium for GIJOE that could bring in a whole new generation of collectors who can help us get what we want in the "25th" line, as well as more people to collect with regarding vintage Joes. I really do hope the movie does decently well (regardless if i like it or not) so Joe collecting can hit a whole new level. With regards to the new ROC figures, there are MANY who I would like to get. Here's a few examples... Hawk - want the one that comes with the Pitt. I like the casting choice of Dennis Quaid. I think he will rock. Snake Eyes - we NEED a different look for ol' Snakes. Remember, the V2 vintage Snake Eyes (that all of us either want real bad, or treasure the most) had lips on his mask too! I love the trenchcoat version as well. Ninja takes on gunfighter role. Nice! Scarlett - the promo images of Rachel look HOT! Many have complained her figure does not. Hasbro makes action figures of the characters, not those mini statues of porn stars. She looks fine. (I'll be buying 2 of the fatigues version of her so I can put that head on the armored version though). Heavy Duty - Here's the dude that everyone is bagging on his rocket launching MEGA-mini-gun. He comes with a more normal version in the 2nd release. If you get both (stay with me dudes and dudettes) you can swap the cool version of the gun wherever you want! Oh, and Mr. Eko from LOST was COOL so I think we have a good shot at the 'character' we want here, but yes, we all wish it was Roadblock. If they did make the name change and added comedy to this role, they could have freed up the Ripcord character (see below) to use someone else like Tunnel Rat (and kept going with the international theme -see Breaker's entry just below here) Breaker - I have to admit, seeing the same actor on LOST has helped me get used to this guy and I hope he brings something new to the character. Yeah, I wish good ole' Alvin were going to be depicted like he was in the cartoons and comics (cartoon voice, beard and bubble gum), but we can't have it all, and having a few other ethnic characters in the show will actually help the global appeal. I just wish they would have used characters like Zap and Tunnel Rat for stuff like that. Still think the new Breaker is cool though. At least he ain't a chick now. Duke - They HAD to get a pseudo blonde for the role and Channing looks decent. Sure the costumes aren't vintage, but we all liked the "New" Batman costume in 1989 didn't we? The armor costumes are actually cool. The Accellerator suits are what I'm fearing. Desert Duke looks great. And like I once said about the missile launchers, just put them aside. Kids like them and a ton of us here are "Openers", so we can ignore the launchers and use the other stuff (or, just add Marauder stuff and install your smile). Ripcord - Yup, totally agree that another character should have been used here. Like.... Alpine or Iceberg maybe? I think Marlon will do fine acting in the role. We need comedy in the film. Let's just wait and see how this one goes for now. I understand if people are passing on his figure tho. I proably will. Storm Shadow - Resolute showed us we have to have a new explanation on the "sword brother" bit. I like the fact we will get a new take on that. Resolute had to end that too quickly due to time constraints and I wish they could have expanded on their take of the relationship to Snake-Eyes, so I hope the movie gives us just enough to cover the premise, and teases on how it will further be explored in upcoming sequels. Figures are really growing on me tho. Destro - Can't wait to see how he actually plays out. Looks good so far. Can't wait to see him in the mask and how he works in a sequel. Figure looks GREAT! (the masked one) Baroness - I don't think anybody hates her new look. I'm sure we'll still get plenty of skin from her in other costumes if that's what you dislike about the fully covered leather costume. Here's one character that I think we are all ok with as-is. Ice Viper - OK, who ISN'T getting this figure? I won't go any further for now (fingers are hurting). But I think there is just enough listed here to make a few of us rethink how we are approaching the toys and the movie and may actually cause a couple of you to give them a second chance. If the toys hit the shelves and the movie hits the theaters (and the web) and you STILL hate it, no biggie. Just give it all a chance and try to understand what even a semi-successfull movie and toy line can do for us collectors. How bad do you want a Flagg? ANY Flagg? Wow, that was way more than 2ยข!

I hope for all of our sakes, that Rise of Cobra and it's merchandise proves that GiJoe will hold a place in Hasbro's future.

I love alot of the RoC stuff and can't wait to get it and incorporate it into my Joeverse. Some of it I don't like, but most of it I do.

Yes. Let's tell Hasbro that no matter what kind of lame crap they decide to slap together, we the loyal Joe fans will buy it anyway. I'd rather show Hasbro that if they want my money, they've gotta put out something I want. It's up to everyone else what they do with their money.

And...... You're also saying you think the new toys (and movie) suck that bad? If so, I understand. I just don't think this new stuff is THAT far off from the 25th stuff we are getting now. We all have our opinions. I will just respectfully disagree.

The movie and the toys don't necessarily go hand in hand. Liking one doesn't mean you like the other, and vice versa. Can like the toys and hate the movie.

AMEN, brother.
I'm just glad we're getting a Movie. Will I love it? I won't know until August but you know what, I'm watching the Movie with an open mind. Yeah, I hate the accelerator suits just like the rest of you, but we know it's not a two hour 'accelerator' movie. I really do hope the Movie at least warrants a sequal. As for the ROC toys, there's alot of stuff I like that I will get. The PIT is definitely off my list, but there's other goodness in this Movieline. Maybe the movieline sells well that the Joe brand continues and branches out to Resolute & Classic versions. Just like Transformers did. I mentioned this in a another thread, "we gotta make sacrafices to get what we want." In the end, there'll always be people that won't be happy no matter what. It's not 1982 anymore and we have to give this line a chance. I remember when the line went on hiatus and came out with Sigma 6. I liked it, I didn't love it but I gave it a chance I even bought 8" Lt. Stone. I know there's some die hard Sigma 6-ers out there that were pissed when Sigma got canceled. But you know what Hasbro saw that Sigma didn't work went back to basics and gave us the 25th "Classic Line". Hasbro owns G.I. Joe it's their baby for 40+ years. They're testing waters to get Joe to Star Wars status like in the 80's. Maybe if the ROC line doesn't do well Hasbro will go back to the 25th "classic line". Just remember the collectors alone can not keep this line afloat and Hasbro's just trying different things to keep it afloat for us collectors. |
