There's absolutely no reason G.I. Joe movies can't be spun off into a huge franchise the way Avengers has been and what Disney wants to do with Star Wars. You can have TV tie-ins and crossovers with Transformers. Why Hasbro isn't pursuing this kind of thing and managing it competently is absolutely mind-bogglingly stupid. Every studio in the world is desperate to control a brand they can build like this, so much so that they apparently even want to do the same thing with Ghostbusters now. The G.I. Joe brand has everything they need right in the box ready to go and Hasbro can't put together a decent project. It's even more spinoff-ready than Transformers is with all the different factions of characters and their backstories to play with.
Keep in mind Disney can pull this off with Guardians of the Galaxy, characters not nearly as well-known or with as much history as the G.I. Joe characters. No reason whatsoever Hasbro shouldn't be investing a ton of money into building the brand as an entertainment franchise. Last I checked Captain America did great both domestic and overseas despite having "America" in the title. There are no roadblocks in front of the potential for G.I. Joe other than the ones Hasbro has created themselves. |

Amazingly, I can watch both and enjoy them. I really think we only need a 3rd great movie to come along and save this franchise...

most average consumers barely knew the brand the year before (aside from vague memories of their childhoods watching the cartoon and toys), and many wrote off the movie as a cheap cash grab destined to fail. With heavy marketing and in a sea of franchises and sequels, the film managed to establish itself as something new and fresh and was a decent film (from a casual standpoint) on top of that. But I would argue on the history of GI Joe: The brand has a long history, but really no defined IDENTITY. Captain America, Spider-Man, Batman, regardless individual interpretations, all share a common identity that people can look at and say "this is Spider-Man" or "this is TRansformers". But what is GI Joe? Is it a modern reflection of military personel? Is it a team of Adventurers? A vast army fighting colorful villains? Anime-styled Superheroes? Futuristic super soldiers? A Rag-tag freedom force? Sadly, at one point or another, GI Joe has been all that and more. At this stage, it is damn near impossible to boil GI Joe down to a clear "identity" because that identity has changed so much over the decades. As is, the ARAH based version has stuck around because it is the version with strongest identity of them all, but ask someone over the age of 40, and they'll point to the 12" figures as GI Joe. And ask Joe Schmo on the street, and they're liable to point to The Corps as GI Joe. Hasbro HAS invested into GI Joe over the years. In all reality, they've probably invested MORE into GI Joe than Transformers, if you consider relative success. The problem is that Transformers have "clicked" with kids over the years and GI Joe has not.

i liked the movies. Im not a channing tatum hater but I thought he made a bad duke. Woulda rather Chris pine.
I still think Hasbros best way to go is Video console route. Look at stuff like Halo and God of War. Very successful video game franchises with a toy tie in. Halo being a fairly succesful toy tie in. Hasbro could build all kinds of worlds within the video game realm, featuring various characters to choose from, and different bosses to fight, etc. And from that you could reintroduce a toy line. A toy line that could be kept small until it showed some interest. Last edited by dj7000; 10-01-2014 at 07:57 PM.. |

I hated roc. I stomached retaliation. Now, if they would have taken the plot to winter soldier, and made it a gi joe movie, it would have been a grand slam. The secret government invasion/cover up fit perfectly for cobra infiltrating the US government...in my opinion.

I didn't like ROC. Retaliation was better, but it had it's moments. Joe nerds can't get over how they feel a movie should be based on whatever their perception is. And the Joe nerd film experts who took a film class, yet aren't actual filmmaker's are worse than the basic fan.
Somewhere in another thread someone commented that the Joe's weren't readily recognizable, yet Cobra was. I agree. There were elements in both that fit and there were a lot of "what the hell was that?!". Ripcord could've been a blue skinned alien and it wouldn't have mattered to me. They felt like two separate entities. Some information about Hawk, Scarlett, Heavy Duty, and Breaker would've been great as well as how they apparently downsized. |

I didn't hate either, there were many things that annoyed me, roc had the excitement that a Joe movie was made, and after seeing it a few times it isn't as bad as when I first tore it apart.
Second was much better, but disliked how firefly/cc kept showing their faces. I see them as "gi Joe" but just another universe, I have read enough joe comics and different storylines to know there isnt just one way anymore how to take these characters. |
