I like both movies.
Watched RoC the other day and think it's a pretty great movie. |

All I know is I can re-watch RoC at any time now and enjoy it. Retaliation, not so much. But I also enjoyed RoC the first viewing a lot more than I liked Retaliation. I think it comes down to the film-making itself. Not saying Rise of Cobra is grand piece of cinema, but it feels professional--rushed, for sure, but professional--while Retaliation seems ham-fisted and amateurish. There are bits of Retaliation that feel "right," but taken as a whole, it sucks. Mostly, RoC is fun, if not exactly the G.I. Joe most fans wanted. Retaliation is probably closer to what fans wanted and I think it suffers for it. It's like it's the best G.I. Joe fan film ever...which isn't saying much considering it had a Hollywood budget.

I liked both movies, for what they were, action flicks. There are some people, including me, that really didn't care for:
1. All the black outfits. And the grey camo. I feel they could've stuck to the characters' original colors and still have appealed to the masses. I think it would've made a lot more of the fanboys happy. 2. How Cobra Commander was...whatever he was. An army buddy to Duke, the Baroness's brother, a doctor, wore a fish bowl on his head. Didn't really resemble the Cobra Commander I know and love. I know, I know, it's not about me. 3. Duke and Baroness being lovers. 4. Ripcord being black. 5. Ripcord having the hots for Scarlett. 6. Covergirl dying. 7. The Cobra army being basically, unrecognizable. 8. Duke dying. 9. Other main Joes dying. 10. Zartan dying. And just looking like a regular person throughout both movies. But these are just a small list of complaints I've heard, seen, and read. |

I would like them if they didn't have Channing Tatum and The Rock starring in them. I just don't like those guys as actors. Almost wish they cast nobodies instead.

Merged the two threads that I felt were basically the same idea.

Retaliation was a better movie and it was a more faithful having it's roots in the original canon but, neither ROC or Retaliation were great movies.
Personally, I think the best thing to come out of the movies was the toys and even then, much of the ROC line was redundant and boring. Here's a question for the OP- What was good about the movies? |

The first time I saw them, I didn't like ROC because it was dumb, and didn't like Retaliation because it was boring. On my second viewing, I thought ROC was a little better than I remembered, but still dumb. But Retaliation I hated. It was even more boring and terrible than I remembered. As for why they are bad movies, I think it's because they are ashamed of the material. They don't want the G.I.Joe of the cartoon or comics, they want something more "serious". I see a lot of parallels between the Joe movies and how DC did Man of Steel. -d
