Personally, I think the Transformers movies have a bad director too, but I seem to be in the minority on that one...
I'd guess the big directors are more interested in having their name attached to meaningful stories rather than a movie based entirely on a toy line. Would you rather see your name above "Schindler's List" on the marquee, or above "My Little Pony: The Movie"?

I think it is the same reason record companies do not like to hire good instrumentalists. Control. They wanted to make an all things to all people movie ( especially the lowest denominator of the dumbest most simple and common tastes) by focus group and committee and a good Director would want some element of control in making a movie with a single inspired vision. Simple as that.

Python Puckman pretty much nailed it: The "good" or "big-name" directors basically have their own stuff going on, and have no real interest in attaching themselves to a toy franchise movie.
Comic-Book Movies have gotten a lot of mainstream acceptance in recent years, but "Toy movies" aren't quite there yet. Bear in mind that most Comic-Book movie directors became big names because of their comic-book movies, not before they got into comic-book movies (See: Christopher Nolan, and even Joss Whedon who was a big TV Director but not so much a successful movie director). "Toy movies" haven't quite reached that level of "artistic merit" yet, and probably won't for quite a while. Heck, if you tally up the box-office take of Michael Bay's filmography prior to Transformers vs. Stephen Sommers prior to RoC, Stephen Sommers actually was a higher-grossing director than Michael Bay. So Sommers wasn't just some schlub (though he was undoubtedly past his prime)...he was a guy with some solid light-fare blockbuster hits under his belt. On paper he was a good choice for something like G.I. Joe. John Chu managed to make an OK movie despite being comparatively inexperienced. Say what you will about the script and "unfaithfulness" (which is always going to be a factor for the hardcore fandom), the action beats were pretty solid (especially the mountainside battle), and generally the performers and performances were much better. Certainly the action was a lot more compelling than the accelerator-suit chase in RoC. In a perfect world, G.I. Joe would find some talented young director that's well-suited to the material and let them have at it (see: The Marvel formula). But Paramount doesn't seem to want to apply as much effort as Marvel does (and let's face it, Marvel's generally snapping up most of the best young directing talent in Hollywood left and right). |

While he nailed The Mummy, he went way overboard with Van Helsing. Truth is, there were signs of a penchant for going over the top in the Mummy 2. IMO, he struck a pretty good balance between the goofy and the serious in RoC. I was personally glad it wasn't all REAL-ASS MILITARY...it is a toy property after all. |

It's funny that the directors get all the credit or shit for the overall movie when a lot of it is the producers, production designers, writers and cinematographers.

In the end, it's all the director's responsibility. It's their "creative vision," so they say. The director hires all the people involved in the actual production of the flick and that makes them directly responsible for all aspects of production. In that regard, directors are like managers, and the buck stops with them, but they often have to be skilled negotiators as well. The producers find the cash to get the thing made and expect that to buy them input on how the thing is done. The screenwriters sometimes consider the script to be their artistic baby and can be loathe to compromise. The holder of the rights to the story/property also want their say and can be similarly uncompromising. The studio has its own set of demands relating to financials, rules and regs and etc. In the middle is the director trying to form a cohesive vision that satisfies as many of the above as possible, including him/herself, while also producing something that will be not only financially viable, but often artistically viable too.

I think it was more of a script problem than director problem. I always thought Chu did the best he could with what he had to work with.
