When they're all talking to Colton, Roadblock dumps the dog tags out and Colton picks up one set, and mentions the name "Conrad Hauser" and asks about him.
Roadblock tells him he's dead, and I could swear I saw Colton put Duke's dog tags in his pocket. If so, it was kinda weird. Unless it was meant to be a subtle hint for a future story point. Colton being Duke's dad or something like that? |

I dunno, man. Maybe, maybe not. Good eye, though. I think that's one of the most fun things about gi joe, personally.
We've watched duke explode and we've seen what's assumed to be his dead body when Rock takes his dogtags...but he couldve been a robot or nanomite imposter and the REAL duke was kidnapped months ago and has been subjected to numerous kinds of scifi torture that will explain the recast : ) Same with baroness, hopefully.

It just seemed strange that Colton took such an interest in specifically Duke, and then put his dog tags in his pocket.

Yes that's a very good point. I wondered, myself, why he specifically took his tags and specifically asked Rock 2 say something abt him, and specifically putbthem in his pocket. It did feel a lot like "foreshadowing".

Edited for unnecessary snark.
I didn't even notice. But I think those posters below me gave reasonable explanations. I think if anyone's thinking that Colton dropping it in his pocket was "foreshadowing" of Duke being alive, I really don't think this movie would be that subtle with its' foreshadowing. If you're thinking it could've been "foreshadowing" of the dog-tag itself turning up again...well, that I could see. Last edited by Jmacq1; 04-03-2013 at 08:06 AM.. |

If he did put them in his pocket I can think of two reasons it was written/happened that way.
1. Bruce Willis is so used to pulling dog tags off of people that it was just habit, and he did it on instinct. Willis pretty much does what he wants to on set, just ask Kevin Smith. 2. It may have seemed kind of callous to show Colton just toss those tags back on the pile with the rest. It also may have seemed kind of weird if he gently placed it back on the pile too. putting it in the pocket or just holding it in his hand till the camera cuts away seem to be the better screen actions.

It was done more than likely because Joe knew Hauser was in charge of the current G.I.JOE Tactical team, and wanted to ensure Hauser was given an accommodation when everything was sorted out.

Colton does mention "he was your captain". Just showing respect for a fallen leader/officer. I really wouldn't look any more into it then that.

These sorts of subtle gestures (in many cases done improv by the actors as multiple takes are being shot) are exactly how 'foreshadowing' is done for the next film. The writer's tend to re watch previous things to see where they are at (NOT to preserve 'canon' or be faithful to fans to much as to keep a sense of continuity) and use those subtle gestures as the need/discover them.
Some of the more enjoyable moments in film come from this sort of improv, both in script and gesture! |
