Starting with the concept design by Matthew R. Cunningham:
Quote:
Cunningham was initially hired by Paramount to design the new Cobra Hiss Tank, which included blue-sky conceptual development, multiple design iterations, and close collaboration with the vehicle Art Director and Production Designer.
Several constraint systems were in play for this project including operational feasibility, as the tank was constructed on an existing treaded vehicle base, cinematic considerations put forth by the Director, and marketing requirements from Hasbro. Other vehicle concepts included helicopters, fast-attack tanks, and airplane interiors. Until the final real-life version, from Under The Radar: Quote:
The Cobra H.I.S.S. Tank is one of the most iconic pieces of gear from the ‘80s G.I. Joe universe and the filmmakers wanted to create a real-life version for the G.I. Joe: Retaliation movie. In this clip from the upcoming Blu-ray release, director Jon M. Chu and Hasbro’s Brian Goldner talk about designing and building the High Speed Sentry vehicle.

That's cool. I'm not sure I liked the final product. Maybe it was the color or overall look...I can't place it. Ok, back to F5ing on HTS!!

I liked the design and where the concept started. I like the third and forth pictures. The H.I.S.S. tank had a imposing, intimating dread to it. If you put a figure in front of it, it towers over them. That I feel, at least for me, was the appeal. Once it was looked at as a different "fancy" style, but still a flat tank; it lost it's appeal to me.
I'll used the example of the movies The Punisher and Punisher War Zone. Whether you like each of the movies or not, is not the point. When Thomas Jane came on screen, you squint your eyes and tell yourself, "ok, he is playing the character of the Punisher." When Ray Stevenson came on screen, you automatically got excited; knowing he is the Punisher. In G.I. Joe Retaliation, let's just say I was doing a whole hell lot of squinting, grimacing, and pondered the WTF moments of the film. |

They should have keep how the cockpit extended out over the front with the main body as a counterweight. For realism, enter the cockpit like the H.I.S.S. II, which was the coolest part of that tank.

First picture would be the best if it didn't have those damn arms for the cannon. rather a hulking, troop carrier, body.

I'd have to agree with that.
I understand the intent to link the HISS to the original tank with the glass cockpit but it just doesn't work in the movie... It just doesn't look tough enough nor futuristic enough. The concepts looked better somehow. |

found this thread googling pictures of Hiss Tanks because of the thread on which is the best Hiss Tank.
Why did the toy end up having the cockpit extend upwards with the gun turret? To me, the value of the extending weapons platform is you can keep the main body of the tank protected in a hull down defilade, and then extend the weapons up to engage, then quickly retract again. Some of those concept drawings are really cool. |
