and I have some thoughts....
Rise of Cobra was a good movie. I remember back when I saw it the first time in the theater, it wasn't a letdown. I was pleasantly surprised. The toys had me fearing for the worst (still say they sucked!), but I did like it. After not watching it for over a year... it's still quite good. I liked Sienna Miller a lot better this time around, and Channing Tatum as Duke kinda grew on me. Destro and Zartan were spot on, and I loved Dennis Quaid as Hawk (my first Joe!). Scarlett was very good, and the feel of the movie was very much like a Sunbow mini-series (going around the globe and what not). They butchered Cobra Commander horribly, and the Baroness/Duke/Rex thing was goofy. Breaker was not Breaker, and Snake Eyes with lips was disturbing. The Paris chase rocked! It was really, really good... but missing something. Retaliation was amazing. It was alive, action packed, and much better for me the second time around. It really had a Marvel Comic Joe feel to it. Lady Jaye was spot on, and I always thought the Rock would make a great Roadblock. Firefly was a little too Sunbow, but I kinda liked it that way. Cobra Commander was who he needed to be. I know he was the same guy... but he had the ruthlessness missing from the first outing. I'd have loved for Scarlett and Hawk to return, but it still worked. Flint was a bit off to me... but not really bad. Bruce Willis as Joe Colton was great. It had that epic feel missing from ROC. That being said, we as fans of GI Joe should consider ourselves lucky to have such great films added to the legend of GI Joe. Hopefully, part three (fingers crossed) will be even better. Anyone else have a Joe movie night after the home media release? |

i kinda agree...i did like ROC and love RET
my thoughts were the same as yours ROC was a live action sunbow for the cartoon fans and RET was a live action comic for the comic book fans. ROC kept it's goofy globe trotting/battlefield crazyness/superweapon cartoon stuff going and RET was serious, in your face, gritty like the earlier comics. i think each movie as looked at as one for one fan one for the other but both have a place is the best way to view it and i'm glad i'm not the only one that sees it that way.

Flint in the comics is arrogant ass, he was'nt Mr. Rah Rah like he was on the cartoon. The only reason they kept him around was he was good at his job. I thought the movie got that part right.

I found the Baroness annoying in the first movie. It didn't make sense that Rex was Cobra commander and her brother. When she found out, she should tried to put him into a hospital or something.

I liked both. Both had their moments and both had issues. RoC was the stronger story of the two. Retaliation's plot/script just had so many problems. I've heard the Extended Cut fixes/helps some of those issues, haven't watched it yet.
Neither are my Joe movie, but both are good action movies. There was nothing serious or grim or gritty about Retaliation, but it was closer to a comic Joe-vibe then RoC even though RoC had more Joe elements (sci-fi edge, crazy superweapons, vehicles).

RoC felt more claustrophobic - far more sets and green screen action. Retaliation was more on location. That made a big difference for me.
I agree with Troynos, though, that the script was stronger for RoC due to apparently editing. Even the director has said that he had to re-edit the structure of the story because it had too long an intro. Ret. had great elements but was less coherent. RoC had a pretty cogent story but was just not a great Joe movie. The ending - which was redone late in the game - was horrible. The book ending was much better, but still was a little nonsensical. I enjoyed Retaliation more because it was less about SFX and trying to recreate GI Joe and more about just being a fantasy army movie. I think the 3rd movie will be superior because the studio will trust the crew to do the job without tinkering with things.

Anyone else have a Joe movie night after the home media release?[/QUOTE] Yes sir, went to Best Buy, bought the extended cut version watched it last night with my wife. I showed her before the movie what CC looked like in Rise of CRA# and then showed her what CC looked like in Retaliation. She laughed at how bad ROC was compared to Retaliation. I really enjoyed watching Retaliation last night. Tons of action, Firefly was great, Joe Colton was cool, Lady Jaye awesome. Just need to work on Flint for Joe 3. |
