so, looking at the results, would it be safe to generalize that in regards to the changes made in the movie, that Rip Cord being black isn't as big a deal as him being a comedic sidekick, Breaker being of middle eastern background isn't as big a deal (since that is just visual and his personality could still not deviate far from the character), or Cobra Commander's mask isn't as bad of a change as simply his background being an ex-soldier?
They want to think that they love GI Joe for the rich characters, while it's really the visual appeal that associates the characters to the general person, or fan even. I don't think any GI Joe character has much depth at all except for MAYBE the comic book canon, and it's solely visual appeal, with maybe the slight (albeit shallow) characterizations given over the last 30 years to sweeten the deal perhaps, but definitely doesn't make or break the deal based on character development, which in my opinion is none. I'm sure many people will argue with me that it's the opposite because they're a fan of the comic and don't want me saying their beloved characters aren't deep, but they're not changing my opinion, so if you want to state your own opinions, by all means, attack my post, but I'm not defending anything in a lengthy rebuttal because my opinion is set. |

"A movie though, featuring classic 80's looks and costumes with current special effects would be hard to watch." I'd all but say it was the story that was hard to watch, and it was 3 hours long. A lot of people hated King Kong, but I thought it was great. They don't like to admit it, but the story did drag for a bit and could have been peppier, but let's be honest: they can't sit through anything beyond a 2-hour story, and I don't think Kong could have been told in 2 hours with what Jackson was attempting. He said "80s visuals, with current special effects" would be hard to watch. Watchmen is set in the 80s, so it makes sense to have 80s visuals, but the designs were designed in the 80s and updated to today. I don't think it's any harder to watch based off the visuals than Spider-Man or Superman, designed in the 60s and 30s, were based off their visuals. With those properties, they stuck with the iconic visuals, and modified the characterizations over the years. Hell, the word "icon" at it's base meaning means something visual. Anything that is iconic is innately going to be because of the image it gives off. We're a visual species, unless you're blind everything with meaning is given some image to coincide with it, whether it's a written word or mental image of the act, object, or idea. |

What exactly do you mean by new characterization with classic uniforms? Are you talking about physical features or complete changes in personality? In other words, a shy, introspective Asian Duke wearing the classic tan airborne shirt and green pants?
That I think would be the worst thing they could do in a movie because the uniforms, though cool, do not make the characters appealing. It's the personalities, the motivations, the back stories associated with the men and women that Hama originally created that brought GI Joe to life. What's so exciting about the original uniforms worn by Grunt, Breaker, Hawk, Zap and Clutch? To be honest, the solid green is boring, but Hawk's charisma, Clutch's chauvinism, Grunt's unfaltering loyalty and Breaker's eccentricity are what made them so interesting and likeable. Putting a guy in a white Survival shirt with camo pants doesn't make him Outback. Granted, I would love to see some depth added to the characters to further flesh them out. But I'm just not sure what you mean by a new characterization with a classic look. |

great idea for a poll.
i went with classic characters...new look. actually, the newer look is more like the old look from the comics where most had the same uniform, which was more realistic, etc. if the core characterizations are there...the personalities and the way they interact with each other...we'll recognize them no matter what they wear...as long as baroness is in tight black leather...i'm just sayin.
