As far as a previously-built fanbase, I think GI Joe has a pretty famous name. A lot of 20-30 year old males grew up with Joes, and everyone knows the name, whether they know the specifics of the characters. I didn't even get back into Joes until college, but I could tell you quite a bit about it from my childhood. I could also do the same with cartoons I watched as a kid, but never got into the toys or comics. More people are familiar with the brand than they'd admit. Will they pick out the changes in the film? Probably not. But I bet a lot of people will go "WTF?" about the new Commander's look. Everyone remembers the hooded or helmeted CC, not that... thing. I don't have many friends who are into GI Joe or Transformers, but I went with a large group of co-workers to see Transformers on opening night, and afterwards, everyone agreed that Megatron looked like a pile of tin-foil scraps, and that none of the characters were anything they remembered them being like except for Bumblebee, Jazz and Prime.
I don't think the movie will flop, by any means. It'll earn big bucks. Will I be entertained? Perhaps. Will I be let down? I'm sure. Even though I enjoyed Transformers, it had a ton of flaws. The designs were terrible, even though the animation was flawless. The plot was laughable, and the characters were pretty flat. None of the bots had any personality except for Prime and Bumblebee, but in the end, we got to see badass transforming robots kick each others' ass. Yeah, it was cool. Sommers creates big movies, as does Bay. The action will be pretty awesome and polished, and the story will be paper thin. Marvel has done a bang-up job of getting great directors to helm their films, and we got some amazing stories from them. Casting was also pretty amazing too. DC has done a pretty good so far as well. Nolan, Raimi, Singer, and Favreau (even Leterrier did a great job with Hulk, if you ask me) have done amazing jobs bringing the comics to film. Frank Miller's stuff has been pretty amazing so far, and a good translation to the big screen. The Hasbro films so far, not so much. Big flashy directors, a few decent names as far as the cast, but none of them really "great" actors who are still known for making "great" movies. One of my best friends could give two half shits about GI Joe, but he's a huge film buff... He laughed at the GI Joe trailer, and scoffed at Sommers being the director. He ranked him right up there with Ratner, Bay and McG. I agree with him completely. Last edited by Mandingo Rex; 03-03-2009 at 02:41 AM.. |

Quick sidenote to Paramount:
the gijoemovie link in my gijoe movie updates confirmation email was broken. Not difficult to overcome, but....

We're also an extremely small percentage of the total population that will go see/want to see this movie.
The majority of people will probably recognize the name "G.I. Joe" and remember it, vaguely, as a toy and cartoon series, but the specifics they won't know, so this movie will be brand new as fas as they are concerned. Which reinforces what I've said before, this movie is not being made for us. I like the strategy. If the base grows, (and Hasbro makes a gazillion more on plastic crack) then I think it will definitely benefit the "collectors" (also read "fanatics"). |

This will be the same as Bay's Transformers...
Lots of action, terrible characterization and a crappy story. Why can't Hasbro learn from Marvel about how to make a comic-property movie? |

I dunno about that. Marvel films haven't all been that good, a decent number of them didn't do so well or went straight to TV.

Ghost Rider, I haven't even seen, and is the only "mainstream" character flick I don't even want to see. Crap like Elektra should never have been greenlit. The earlier movies, yes, are total crap. Recently though, Marvel has been on a fairly steady roll with their current films. Maybe if Hasbro were to make a few more films, then maybe they might get their shit together by GI Joe 3 or TF3, but I doubt that... Most franchises peak at #2, if they don't get worse as they go along. Damn skippy, Hulk sucked. If you ask me, that one may be the worst Marvel failure, for what it should have been. The Incredible Hulk blew it out of the water, and should have been what the first Hulk film failed to be. Punisher was okay for what it was, but it wasn't great. I'm not a huge Punisher fan. I will say it's much better than the Lundgren version. Daredevil was meh, but not in the top tier either. Regardless, even the worst Marvel flops have bigger actors than the TF or Joe franchises so far... Directors, is questionable on the lower end, but the higher end Marvel definitely has them beat. wouldn't it be great...
IF the movie sucks... there is enough of a show of an audience, and people buying the comics, toys, etc, that they get a re-make like Marvel did with Hulk and then the Incredible Hulk... you had the crap, then the one going way closer to the old canon of the comic. or maybe it's more that way already and we're just panicking. |

If the movie bombs, I highly doubt Hollywood is going to pony up for a "better" version anytime soon. More likely it'll be assumed that G.I. Joe simply doesn't hold the nostalgia value of Transformers, and it'll be shelved for the forseeable future.

if this movie is a total bomb, Joe might run the risk of going bye bye for a long, long time (also....no resolute could be a result as well). with the current 25th/modern era figures now being put on indefinite hiatus...with the failure of the movie, comes no more joes. even though i don't like how the movie is shaping up, i do hope the movie line does well enough to give us a trilogy so we can get some of our want-list added into the mix of movie figures. (even if it means i have to take them out of the crappy "ROC" cards and photoshop my own cards for them).
