I have often thought about a situation where Hollywood and Hasbro shows up at my door ask me to write the ROC without any restrictions. It's just a nerdy thing I think of now and then. Like how did Cobra come to power? How would I write that script? How many hours as a kid did you play with a GI JOE an imagine stuff?
If you're a fan of ROC I apologize for this. Now I get the deal they wanna rebrand GI JOE for younger generations but if you could take Cobra's origin and give it a Batman Begins moment what would it be like? For me I would start the Rise of Cobra and call it GI JOE Cobra Origins. I would have started Cobra Commander off in the classic Hood and business suit look. Because I wanna know how someone becomes the most powerful enemy of GI JOE. He needs to be someone with connections in high places. Maybe he was a mafia don or Politician. To me the perfect Cobra Commander would be someone that has connections inside the US government. He would also have mafia ties in order to get to involved with people like Zartan and Destro. Also where does Cobra Commander get his money? Enter Xamot and Tomax who are Cobra Commanders biggest funders. In my Cobra Origin they play the biggest role to the Rise of Cobra because the supply the cash and introduce CC to Destro a wealthy Scottish arms dealer who will eventually supply CC with an army and high tech weapons to create wars with GI JOE who are also buying weapons with Destro. So to me the founders of Cobra are Cobra Commander a shadowy former US politician with mafia ties around the world and is also well trained in warfare. Xamont and Tomax wealthy wall street bankers with an inside track on the stock market and funding the terrorist organization. Destro is funding CC with an army and the latest high tech weapons the US Government has only dreamed of. So I would build those relationships first because they would make the most sense when building Cobra from the ground up. To me Zartan is underworld mafia with main connections to Cobra Commander from his Washington days. Zartan has been in the ears of politicians for years and his gang of Dreadknocks have muscled enough Washington politicians to gang a rep and some bit of control over them. Eventually Cobra Commander grooms Zartan to become a politician and run for president with funding from Destro and Xamont and Tomax. Zartan's ability to act and become likable wins him the US election even though his past is very cloudy. Remind you of someone? So those are my first characters in my Cobra Origins. How Cobra rises to power in the most logical way in the first movie. In this first movie CC would wear his famous hood and a business suit until Destro designs him his iconic battle suit. In my GI JOE world Cobra Commander has to have the ability to bring evil together. He needs to be savvy and be well connected. While the idea of CC being a scientist is interesting it defeats Dr. Mindbender who is also a great villain in later movies. He would be Destro's connection and CC's biggest detractor within Cobra. In my GI JOE world these two will become the biggest reason for the demise of Cobra because Mindbender and Baroness create Serpentor behind CC's back after they become disenchanted with his power over Destro and control over his army and weapons. Mindbender is in love with the Baroness and will do anything she asks even if it's against Destro and Cobra Commanders wishes. Cobra Commander eventually has Mindbendor killed by Firefly after learning of Serpentor. To me I make Storm Shadow Destro's loyal body guard. Destro once recruited Snake Eyes as well after he discovered them both looking for the greatest body guards on earth. In Destro's mind ninjas are the best body guards. Snake Eyes once Destro's body guard leaves after discovering how Destro is playing for the bad guys (Cobra) He eventually becomes a JOE after foiling many of Cobra's attacks. This is why Snake Eyes has an inside track on everything. HIs connection with Destro and Strom Shadow. Ok thats all my nerdy Cobra Origins if you guys have any ideas share your Cobra Begins script! I like your Cobra Origin idea. I have always said that to take over this government, you'd have to do it from the inside. Force won't work.
As far as ROC goes, once you know what Cobra is doing, and you re-watch it, it's more entertaining because you see them making their moves. On the show, the viewer pretty much knows Cobra's plan, and we get to see it unfold. ROC should have started with Cobra Commander already openly running Cobra in the Hood & Battle Helmet. They discuss their scheme and the players they'll use, and then watch as GI Joe tries to figure out their plan. Have the Joes already established and have the major players present in their popular established roles. I think Hollywood's desire to tell origin stories is slowing down and sometimes ruining alot of movies. Most pop culture films have an established fan base, so make it for them. Newcomers may feel clueless with the characters, but if the movie is awesome they can find out more about the characters and mythology through other mediums such as comics, tv shows, etc. All in all, I like any film that helps keep something that I like around for a little while longer because nothing lasts forever. But Hollywood should stop worrying so much about telling origins. Use memories, flashbacks, etc to relay origin info. Star Wars started in the middle of the story and it worked. Still would. |

A full rewrite? That's a pretty heavy load to tackle in one post. But I do like how Cobra was introduced in the Renegades series; Cobra was a corporation with their influences stretching into practically every aspect of modern life. The army was there, just hiding and waiting to strike so a full background going from day one of Cobra's and CC's origin seems too informative, just the idea behind what there power base is would be enough to get the point across.
The nanites for EVERYTHING was annoying, I would have picked it to do one thing specifically, like make super soldiers. The threat of individuals place in key positions of power that could be activated into obedient minions of Cobra's will would have been more enjoyable to me rather then the catch-all threat they had in RoC. Duke would be an established character and I would have used a new crew of recruits to introduce the existence of Joe. More wiggle room for me as a writer and nobody gets their pre conceptions of how so-and-so acts/looks messed with too much. As far as an ending climactic sequence? I would have kept to location remote, the second movie deals with Cobra taking over and it would be hard to have that level of insidiousness if the Joe/Cobra battle was over something like, saaaay, the Statue of Liberty. You kinda give away your intentions there and it would be hard to rally behind the Cobra flag if you know they are a bunch of terrorists. Maybe a fight to bring down the Cobra Communications station that is controlling their nano-infested army? Not sure. The accelerator suits would not have been portrayed as they were in the Sommers version. But like Docdrako I wouldn't slow down the action or story with too much origin. It's stuff that could be hinted at along the way of the franchise. Some of my more favorite movie stories don't explain the whole thing, they let me imagine and hypothesize. They are also pretty straight-forward in their concept, keep it simple in the idea.

Well I like how Cobra was introduced in Retaliation as a Special Operations Group.
So in ROC, I would have it be a PMC full of retired veterans who are disgruntled and re-enlist to form an uprising from within the military(Somewhat like Vamp's Navy SEAL team from MGS2, though those guys were active duty SEALs, not guys who re-enlisted or were retired) or something to try to influence existing soldiers to defect and join the PMC. With MARS backing the operational costs of the PMC and with the PMC using primarily MARS weaponry, the PMC is virtually self-sufficient. Meanwhile, another covert operations group is in the making called GI Joe. Some of the Joes-in training catch on to the fact that the Cobra PMC is establishing a power base and that more and more soldiers are secretly aligning with Cobra. With the government increasingly depending on the Cobra PMC, the higher ups doubt the theories of the would-be Joes, and it's up to the Joes to find evidence to back up their claims. When Cobra realizes that the would-be Joes are onto them..... So by the end of the 1st movie I would have the surviving would-be Joes form the Joe team with more confidence by the government BUT introduce the Jugglers too, and allude to 1 of the influential Jugglers to actually be working for Cobra. Could be Crystal Ball or something. |

Honestly, I don't think I would even handle Cobra's rise. Frankly, I feel it's an origin that doesn't need to be told. Sometimes, a little mystery is better. I think a better story would have been how G.I. Joe formed.
