This thread is to discuss GI Joe 2's box office performance now that it has seen wide release. This thread only applies to the film's financial performance and how it compares to the prior film and its competition.
THIS IS NOT A THREAD TO DISCUSS THE FILM'S QUALITY OR REVIEWS OF THE FILM ITSELF Friday, the film earned another $15.5 million, more than THREE TIMES the opening box office of "The Host", the newest adaption from Twilight author Stephanie Meyer. Box Office Mojo is currently tracking the film's 5 day gross to come close to RoC's $54 million 5 day performance.

Anyhow as for my actual contribution to the discussion, it's very important to note that Retaliation cost 50 million dollars less to make than ROC, making a similar gross even more impressive.

It's also interesting to note that most assuredly Retaliation will gross nearly the entire domestic gross of Battleship in it's first weekend, putting it well out of danger of being another Battleship Bomb as Paramount may have initially feared.

asking people to stay on topic on HT?
anyway, I think the decision to open up on Tuesday in some areas may have been to pad the first week's total. A pretty strategic and smart decision if you ask me. The real test will come when next weekend rolls around the main competition being Evil Dead. I know I am not interested in Evil Dead, the main reason being that it is not a comedy. That could severely hurt its opening weekend.

I predict G. I. Joe: Retaliation will pass $550 Million mark (Theater + Home Release).
Expecting $50 Million to $100 Million at the end of Easter Weekend. |

I gave em $63.50 Thursday. Hope it does well enough to greenlight a sequel. This is one franchise I would love rebooted after a trilogy.

I have no doubt they will make a sequel...I just hope we get it faster, like less than 2 years fast....not nearly 4. The world wants it!

I'll bet it takes a box office nose dive after this weekend. Word of mouth will destroy this picture. I predict it drops off 80% next weekend.

If it doesn't pull in $50+ million by the end of the weekend it'll be considered a disappointment. Box Office Mojo tracking or not, I'd say it's far from a sure thing, especially with Sunday being a "family/religious" holiday more so than "let's go see a movie!" holiday.
Probably going to have a huge dropoff next weekend though. The audience I saw it with (and it was a full house) seemed to enjoy it well enough, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. |
