There is tons of Media marketing just not as much of the movie tie-ins and trinkets, but few movies really get much of that stuff. For ads, promos, etc, I am seeing tons more for this movie than I do the standard action flick.

I have to be honest but I don't recall ROC getting a bigger push than Retaliation, maybe in the toy stores, I'll agree, but that's because they screwed the pooch with all the undesirable, overpriced product they shipped during ROC, it's unfortunate too, because whether Retaliation is good or not, (still haven't seen it) I'm a bar tender and weekends are bad for me to go out, so I'm seeing it Monday night. I still would like a world more product from Retaliation than ROC, it's cost to be honest that's throwing me off, no 3 and 3/4th's action figure is worth ten dollars, imho. The amount of enjoyment I get out of one of them doesn't equate to 10 bucks, sorry I'll wait for thr TRU buy 2 get 1 free sale.

I liked it back then because it felt like the joe brand finally hit the big time. I came in around JvC, as my true childhood was spent with ghostbusters and ninja turtles, and it really felt like gi joe was going to graduate passed the 25th stuff. I guess it did with roc and poc figs, but still.
Everything about ROC kicked ass except for the actual movie itself.

I think Paramount is just playing it safe, ROC made enough money to warrant a sequel but I imagine it's going to take a lot more for Retaliation to get one. ROC was a waste of money for Hasbro as many of the international markets that opened back up for the toys didn't want GI Joe anymore by the time POC came out due to low sales of ROC toys.

Of course they're just playing it safe, I'm just lamenting the situation.

The big marketing that ROC got? Fuller isles? Yes, but I miss ARAH's grand selection of toys in isles even more.

I'd wager part of the reason Retaliation didn't get the same level of marketing muscle is; A) it's already a proven pop culture entity due to movie 1, therefore there isn't the same need to spread the word, B) the majority of the marketing budget originally allotted may have been pumped into the 3d conversion, C) Retaliation isn't a summer blockbuster, summer being the time frame most 'tentpole' movies get the heaviest marketing push from studios.
Personally I don't miss it. I hate walking the aisles at Wal-mart and seeing GI Joe breakfast cereal, kids PJ's, and other sundry items that really have nothing to do with the movie itself but instead seem like marketing vomit- throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. I hate, hate, hate that! If it means more action figures fine, but every other bit of hoary marketing crap can go hang. |

I miss the extra product the first movie had. I miss the books, which told about the characters and vehicles, and the video game, which I played a ton of with my nephew and got him into GI Joe along with the film.
I don't need any sleeping bags or Underoos, though. |
