I have to say, between the expected formula (Cobra theatens the world, Joes save the world), there were some really clever things. The smarmy warden using the heart paddles to get SS, Snake's avalanche... and that has to be the most original idea for nuclear disarmament I've ever seen.

I agree with everything you stated. I think more thought was given to the action and hitting those plot beats rather than WHY they are doing what they're doing.
Where I disagree slightly is on Colton's arsenal. I loved the fact he's got a kitchen full of weapons. That scene made me chuckle. In fact Willis was better than I expected. |

Movies ruin everything. I'm a fan of this and transformers, and both suck. Even retaliation, which I was going to see until I saw this review (thanks for the heads up). Screw bay and sommers. This would have been better with no roc. Just make a new film series.

GI Joe: Retaliation begins with the Joes, led by Duke, sneaking into North Korea across the DMZ to rescue a defector. Ok, I can buy that. Roadblock, Duke, and Flint sneak up to a chain link fence which RB proceeds to cut through using fancy sci-fi gloves. All of this happens a few hundred yards from a North Korean guard tower. Roadblock and Duke move beyond the fence, take out some guards, and find the defector, while Flint is told to stay put at the fence, which makes no sense at all. Flint decides while Roadblock and Duke are doing their thing to sneak onto the guard tower and somehow without being noticed manages to switch the NK flag with a GI Joe flag, which I guess he just happened to have stuffed in his back pocket or something. Yeah, real covert jackass.
I haven't seen the film yet, but if the hole in the fence is the way the Joes are going back out then tactically it would be sound to have Flint watch their way out. I don't think the Joes would want to get back only to find out the North Koreans has stumbled upon their exit point. With Flint watching the hole they would also have a Joe to know if the North Koreans found it and were alerted to trouble. The Joe flag is nod to something fairly old in military terms. There have always been groups that wanted to say you aren't safe we can get in anywhere by leaving some sort of calling card. |

in the beginning of the flick, they allude to the nanomite wars. plural. So um guessing that Cobra commander and company had more shenanigans afoot

It's a nice way of saying "there's a ton of stuff that happened to get us to this point".

My guess is just a mistake by the screen writers - one of many. With Cobra leadership captured or healing, I don't think there would be any major conflicts that could be considered "wars." Small actions like trying to destabilize a region through political manipulation/assasination just to fuck with the Joes. Otherwise they were probably lying low until they could spring the Commander from stasis prison.

1. The "death" (or loss somehow) of the other Joes 2. The Joes becoming more of an American force and not international 3. CC's comment of "old friend" to Firefly 4. The size of Cobra and that they were already working on the Zeus satellites 5. Firefly's comment that "we just needed our commander" And there were a couple of others. I don't think it was a mistake. At the end of RoC there really was no Cobra, just the remnants of MARS which was scattered. So I think at some point CC escaped (would be cool if it was the Baroness that did it, but she died in the attempt or soon after) and that was the nanomite wars. When he was recaptured, SS and Firefly were still loose and along with Zartan kept the ball rolling for when they could rescue CC again. Contradicting that is a couple comments by Zartan to the President. Torturing him to get CC's location (where if CC had escaped, Zartan would know where it was and not the real president) and saying "two terms of you and couple months of me". But I think those were the mistakes. Having nanomite warS (plural) ties the two movies and all the changes together better.

I saw the movie last night and I loved it. Such an amazing step up from the 1st film. There were some things that didnt really place well with the film being an intentional sequel. Such as the whole SS, and Zartan origin story. Which is clearly from the old Marvel comics. But all in all I loved this movie so much that I will be going to see it this weekend once again. I strongly suggest that you give this movie a chance.
My only regret is that Hasbro didnt seem to put too much faith into this movie. I am speaking mainly about the vehicles of course. But time will tell I suppose. -Jason |
