RoC did well enough for a sequel, I think we'd want Retaliation to do much better.

This. I've seen plenty of movies in the 80% range until the "real" critics see it and it plummets to 30-40%. Not saying that's going to happen here but it's way too soon to get excited.

Not true at all. Media outlets want to release reviews as soon as humanly possible, (or as soon as they're allowed). Getting your review out there first is key for any newspaper, magazine, website etc...

Sample size is too small to be significant.

Otherwise virtually every would-be-blockbuster out there apparently "isn't screening for critics" which is not true. In point of fact, when a movie is not screened for critics, my local newspapers actually make a note of it in the section where they do all their Thursday movie reviews (a little block that sums up all the movies opening and what "score" they've received from their reviewers). Also don't confuse "didn't screen for critics" with "embargo on releasing reviews." Two very different and separate things. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-25-2013 at 08:32 AM.. |

Too late for me (for the most part) but I want to see it for myself anyway, so I'm not butt hurt by it.

To be fair, it's only 8 reviews on Rottentomatoes right now. However, most movies that start out that high (even with a relatively small sample size) usually end up in "fresh" territory. I'm betting it'll probably end up with a rating in the high 60's to low 70's (probably the former).
Not that it means anything, really. Plenty of movies with low "tomatometer" ratings become big hits and have very high "audience ratings" which is generally a better indicator of whether the general audiences like a movie. |

But again, it's really all irrelevant. Rottentomatoes is actually a pretty lousy judge of quality in the sense that it's effectively a binary system. There are a LOT of ambivalent reviews that really could go either way that Rottentomatoes kind of seems to flip a coin on as to whether it's positive or negative (especially from reviewers that don't provide a "score" or whatnot). In other words, a movie could have say, a 75% "fresh" rating, but if 40 points of that percentile are basically reviews saying "Meh, it's OK I guess" that get rated as "positive" it presents a somewhat false image that's a good movie (according to critics) when most people might be saying it's basically "a little better than average." |
