G.I. Joe is not realistic, and should not be. (In my opinion).
If you want to watch Zero Dark Thirty, watch Zero Dark Thirty. If you want to watch Black Hawk Down, watch Black Hawk Down. Neither of these are G.I. Joe. G.I. Joe needs humor, fun, and a sense of fantasy. While the fantasy can sometimes be toned down compared to others, it should never be entirely eliminated. G.I. Joe is not "super gritty" and shouldn't be. After all, in the grand scheme of things, the ideal outcome is that more toys are sold to children and the brand thus thrives. Not something you're going to get with "Cobrapocalypse Now." I always find it supremely amusing that people will look at RoC or Retaliation and decry that "That's not the G.I. Joe I grew up with!" and then turn around and suggest that G.I. Joe should be...almost entirely different from the G.I. Joe they grew up with. It's hardly an uncommon occurrence with collectors of nostalgia-based brands though.

Olympus Has Fallen is like the 90th movie Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman have done together. I guess that movie looks more realistic but I couldn't be more taken out of the experience with that alone and all the other cliché who's who of actors in it.

It's just funny to me that this movie Olympus has Fallen is getting so much positive buzz in here and being compared to joe. I saw this preview before a movie recently, and couldn't help but notice similarities to DIE HARD....an R rated movie. Not to mention there appear to be clichés all around in this flick, but apparently it's more realistic. Well, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and in fact i welcome differences of opinion because they make things better, but all things considered, I too believe that gi joe needs to have a more light hearted tone than the average "realistic" war movie due to the simple fact that joe is targeting CHILDREN. An R rated realistic gi joe movie would be cool, but most parents wouldn't take their children to see it, and it would defeat the purpose of even making the movie.

guys there the same movie no really I mean it.
Olympus has Fallen. When the White House (Secret Service Code: "Olympus")[4] is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Secret Service Agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As the national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning's inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster GI Joe Retaliation After being framed as traitors by Zartan, who is still impersonating the President of the United States, the Cobra Commander now has all the world leaders under Cobra's control, with their advanced warheads aimed at innocent populaces around the world. Outnumbered and out gunned, the Joes form a plan with the original G.I. Joe General Joseph Colton to overthrow the Cobra Commander and his allies Zartan, Storm Shadow and Firefly. Same Movie! |

Personally, I'd love a mostly realistic, set in the 80s, movie. With flashbacks to 'nam with Stalker, Snake Eyes, and Tommy Arashikage.

Zero dark thirty 104 million worldwide
Black Hawk down 172 million worldwide The Hurt Locker 49 million worldwide RoC $302 million worldwide The realistic war movies also have almost no significant Toy and merchandising sales. Realistic war movies are not a formula that is going to rejuvenate the GI Joe brand.

Totally based in reality? No. But the formula should be simple: Take a war movie, add a fictional enemy, a little advanced technology and presto you got GI Joe.
Keep GI Joe closer to Blackhawk Down than to Star Trek. |

I think this thread says alot about the biggest divide amongst Joe fans and probably amongst Joe designers as well. Realistic or fantasy? Gritty Combat or fun action? Truth is It would work either way.
