Oh, for f**s sake...
I just hope there's something Joe new. Something, i dunno. Because this threadomancy of a 2 year old movie, ridiculous senseless polls and Captain obvious warning threads is getting tiresome.

Why didnt Cobra Commander make snakes bite everyone in America faces?? Why didnt Destro make a missile that turns people to gold? Why didnt Baroness take a shower with Scarlett?

Retaliation will be a better movie just of the strength of the special effects alone.

Well I think they took some big risks...and I think they did not pay off as well as hoped.
That's because of the execution. I just looked at Sommers's body of work before the RoC project and it isn't very impressive. The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior 2008 The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2001 screenplay - uncredited) 2004 Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride (short) 2004 Van Helsing (written by) 2002 The Scorpion King (character - uncredited / screenplay / story) 2001 The Mummy Returns (written/directed by) 1999 The Mummy (screen story / screenplay/director) 1998 Deep Rising (written/director by) 1997 Oliver Twist (TV movie) (uncredited) 1995 Tom and Huck (screenplay) 1994 The Jungle Book (screenplay/director) 1993 Gunmen (written by) 1993 The Adventures of Huck Finn (screenplay/director) 1989 Catch Me If You Can (writer/director) This is Michael Bay's work up until Transformers 2005 The Island 2003 The Lionel Richie Collection (video documentary) (video "Do It to Me") 2003 Bad Boys II 2001 Pearl Harbor 1998 Armageddon 1996 The Rock 1995 Bad Boys 1994 Meat Loaf: Bat Out of Hell II - Picture Show (video) (music videos) 1992 Shadows and Light: From a Different View (video documentary short) 1991 Great White: My... My... My... the Video Collection (video) (video "Call It Rock N' Roll") 1990 Playboy Video Centerfold: Kerri Kendall (video documentary) 1990 Play That Funky Music (video short) (segment "I Love You") Now this isn't supposed to turn into a Michael Bay sucks thing. I don't watch a lot of movies and Bay is first action director that came to whose work I'm familiar. I'm guessing that people were comfortable with Sommers doing RoC because of his work on Van Helsing and the Mummy movies, but that's only four action flicks to his credit. I felt Hasbro, (assuming they had any imput) should've asked for another director or had some control over the script. Assuming that Bay was available he might of been a better choice. Sure he probably would've had a cluster fuck-straying-very-far-away-from-the source-material-vision for JOE, but I'm assuming his cluster fuck vision for JOE would've been closer to the source material than Sommers. He would've gotten chance to blow a lot shit up, use the walking or running away in slow motion shots that would've had relevance to the film and of course the special effects would've been the shit. They took a risk... -Adding Channing...they clearly wanted something young women would like and yeah they do but they also forgot to see if he was a decent actor...which he's honestly not. Quote:
-Giving the Joe team a different look...with the blackout gear and such...which really took away a lot of character personality.
Quote:
Changing Ripcord...putting aside the change of the characters race, Ripcord was more or less a comedy sidekick...which Wayans actually played perfectly...IF this was a comedy flick, and to be honest Channing had no chemestry with Wayans or Miller so it made both their jobs eevn harder.
One of the problems I had with Duke and Ripcord was their relationship and blatant fraternization that was going between the two. I've never been in military, but most lay people know that the relationship between Duke and Rip was a violation of Uniform Code of Military Justice. For me to believe that Duke and Ripcord had this causal of a relationship is too much of a suspension of disbelief on my part. Again, this shows the failings of Beattie, Sommers, and Gordon as screenwriters. The easiest rememdy to this situation would've been to leave both Duke and Ripcord as enlisted personnel, or make them both officers. Quote:
-Adding the love triangle...this was a BIG risk it was never before established in Joe mythos and to be honest it was a mistake here
Quote:
and to compound a big mistake they added in the element of...-Cobra Commander / Rex...there really was no need to give the Commander a revamped backstory that tied him into Duke, Ripcord, The Baroness or any other character...in fact I think most fans would agree The Commanders backstory was the worst part of the cartoon, (and quickly ignored) and possibly one of the worst parts of DDP's run (connecting SE and CC as two angry guys getting revenge on the road). The Commander works best when he is just some guy out to conquer the world.
Quote:
Now again that said they compounded that mistake with...
-Redesigning Cobra Commanders mask...it really is just awful. -Breaker and Heavy Duty are differant...I actually have no issues with either actor in fact I think they were both pretty good. But HD was a poor substitute for what should have been Roadblock to begin with AND it wasn't even the HD we do know...he's a completely differant character with the same name. Which is the same problem with Breaker. Honestly...I'd rather they and Rip have been all new characters than try and show horn in all new characters in previously established molds. You wouldn't try to make Frodo into a ladies man bedding every woman he could and you don't make James Kirk a bookish dweeb, and James Bond suddenly doesn't fight bad guys but draws the line at killing them. Co-sign this statement. I'm a proponent of adding new characters to the mythos. There is an old saying...stick with what brought you to the dance...in this case they didn't. Co-sign this powerful statement. Granted it wasn't MY Joe, and I would have prefered it to be closer to what I know and love but as a film...I felt it was fun...like I said not perfect but fun.[/QUOTE] So you going to ignore the special effects? Don't you feel you were cheated with the special effects? Quote:
The movie had a lot of things going against it. A few of these were major issues which ultimately left it feeling like any other movie BUT GI Joe:
-Stephen Sommers wanted to make an Accelerator movie for years, ROC essentially IS that movie but with GI Joe character names. GI Joe only in name, not GI Joe everywhere else. Another director should've been chosen, a director who would have focused on making a movie from scratch, not turning an idea that was kept on the backburner into a movie for someone else with different names. Just because something is labeled GI Joe doesn't mean it will come off as GI Joe. -Making a movie during the writer's strike. That would've been epic

No I didn't, lol, I just pointed out that TDKR wasn't a very good movie, you know, in case people didn't notice, which I guess a lot of people didn't.

RoC was great in my opinion. Very enjoyable and a really good Joe movie to boot. I'm also pretty excited for Retaliation which I think will be even better. |

@ Fred Broca...no I really didn't feel too cheated by the effects mainly because everything these days is over CGI'd and aside from the Acellorator suits which was just all around terrible the effects were...passable.

However, Sommers using Accelerator as a basis for GI Joe is not the same. Sure the Joes have used suits before like in Star Brigade, Sigma 6, et al, but Sommers had an entire movie wrapped around the idea of an accelerator suit. That's different from Nolan using the common themes of crime in the city, wealth gap, et al, in his Batman trilogy, as he used pre-established themes which are vital to Batman's story. |
