I think another source of "problems" stems from our culturally reinforced proclivity toward focussing on the negative. What I mean by that is, take for example Retaliation's release being pushed back 9 months. We as a society have chosen to label this a problem. If we instead viewed it as an opportunity to improve upon an already great movie in order to insure that it was even more of a success, then there would be no "problem".

Exactly. "Good" is completely subjective. Can take a movie that is considered great by the majority of people and someone/somewhere will call it horrible.

It's not like anyone goes out there expecting to make a bad movie. When they release a movie they think it's good.
I would think that creative people would know when some efforts are better than others. |

The problem I believe is that there have been so many different versions of GI Joe, that not everyone is going to agree on what's definitive. Even (arguably) the most popular take on Joe, that being the RAH version, is split into two - maybe three camps - as some favor the cartoon, some like the comics, and still others prefer Resolute.
Then along come Hasbro and Hollywood, looking to gather some new fans and earn some dough, and they give us an odd patchwork effort that resembles the franchise yet is something decidedly different. There's simply too many versions. |

Same with classic movies. I could see why someone would think Gone with the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia are bad movies on the basis of them being far too long, thus hard to sit through. I don't see the later that way, but I could see why one would. |

Hasbro has re-invented GI Joe so many times that they dont even know what GI Joe is anymore. Thats causes problems when you make a movie cause you have to explain what it is to the production studio so they can represent it. Can you imagine how that board meeting must of gone?

Why problems with this movie "franchise?"
Here goes- ROC First: 1) Internationalizing GI JOE and alienating many fans & patriots without care. (Typical short- sighted and greedy corporate move.) 2) Gross distortions of classic characters (The Baroness & CC just to start...) 3) Minimal/no characterization. 4) Aweful plot and writing. 5) None of the honor, spirit or fun of classic GI JOE. And for the maybe/maybe not sequel: 1) Ninja Roadblock. (After "Ninja Roadblock," all my questions were answered.) Nothing could be worse than "Ninja Roadblock." 1.1) As if to ensure the movie would suck even if "Ninja Roadblock" was not able to do the trick, we get "3D Conversion." I HATE 3D. Sorry, if you don't like my opinion. Actually, no I'm not sorry. I

"GI Joe is the code name for America's daring, highly- trained special mission force. It's mission? Defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world."
I think every fan could quote that- that's what GI Joe is. Too bad corporate ass-hats didn't get the memo.

The problem is everyone expects something different from a Joe movie. The characters have to look exactly like their toy counterpart, the story must be exactly the same as the comics, the actors need to be giant A-listers. People basically seem to want a live action interpretation of the Marvel comics.

Movies can go wrong all along the process of their creation but when you start with: a feeble director, untried staff writers, a rushed production, no participation ....then what will you get but mediocre?
Sommers is a hack director. Don't you think the studio knew that? His scale is what they wanted to pay. The scriptwriters of Zombieland wrote Retaliation. Again, they must be the cheapest. A shortened production schedule for both films= a studio wanting a product to throw into film release schedule- no matter WHAT film it was. And where is Hama in all this. I keep seeing Stan Lee's puss in every Marvel film. Marvel keeps their hands in their product and it shows with the quality put out. |
