GI JOE was always about the American soldier, whether its name or its 12 inch beginnings to its A Real American Hero incarnation. What changed was Hasbro started marketing GI JOE to compete with Star Wars and all the other sci-fi themes of the late 80's to early 90's and then they did the same thing during the 2001 run after they stopped re-releases and went back to what they were doing in the 90's with JvC, VvV and Sigma 6.
Plus, it's incredibly suspect to claim that it was "neon and sub-teams" that killed Joe when far more likely it was simply the kids that had played with Joe in the 80's growing out of the toy-buying phase. When you figure that in it's amazing ARAH Joe lasted until '94 (and if you listen to some of the Hasbro folks who were around back then, it was more the Kenner/Hasbro merger that killed ARAH Joe than poor sales even then). Cobra and GI JOE are both victims of political correctness. I would say watching Captain America with his Howling Commandos vs Nazi Hydra in the First Avenger movie was the closest we'll see to the original GI JOE Real American Hero as we knew it, onscreen.

Cobra and GI JOE are both victims of political correctness. I would say watching Captain America with his Howling Commandos vs Nazi Hydra in the First Avenger movie was the closest we'll see to the original GI JOE Real American Hero as we knew it, onscreen. GI JOE was a take off the original Nick Fury and his fury force and Cobra was Hydra. ARAH without Marvel hasnt really been GI JOE like it used to be, and without Marvel producing or co-producing I dont have much hope for the franchise. IMO, one of the most endearing qualities of Joe has been his ability to adapt with the times with concepts like Star Brigade, Ninja Force, DEF, as well as Extreme, Sigma Six, and even RoC. GI Joe is all things and everything. Sure he started off as an American GI, but he can be an international hero, as well as a ninja commando too! |

Combine a story along the lines of Resolute with the realism along the lines of Act of Valor and you will have a great GI JOE movie.
Give Bravo Team Joe-style articulation and a crapload of accessories and I'll be happy. Couldn't care less about Sunbow, Hama or some reminiscences of your childhood. It's time GI Joe enters the not too distant future. |

People didn't care for it so much.

I meant modern warfare combat in terms of story telling, like the video games... not the character or vehicle design. I mean how cool would it be if a live action version of a squad of Alley Vipers looked exactly like the ARAH Alley Viper, but only more high tech versions and they still behaved exactly like a modern military squad in combat.

What future did it enter? It was like Jules Verene future tech...and Transformers...and james bond...and x-men...
I didnt see anything remotley close to whats being planned for 50-100 years from now sci-fi tech weapon wise...no F-22 Raptors, no rail-gun based tanks/hardware, no Litoral ships, nothing remotley close to anythign you'd find in a Joe Pitt or motorpool...the joe sin the 80s had better tech then ROC lol..

You can preserve a lot of what makes GI Joe special without giving them laser rifles, Accelerator Suits or dress some characters like circus clowns.
Still, you can make it more realistic, dirty, gritty. |

The problem I believe is that there have been so many different versions of GI Joe, that not everyone is going to agree on what's definitive. Even (arguably) the most popular take on Joe, that being the RAH version, is split into two - maybe three camps - as some favor the cartoon, some like the comics, and still others prefer Resolute.
Then along come Hasbro and Hollywood, looking to gather some new fans and earn some dough, and they give us an odd patchwork effort that resembles the franchise yet is something decidedly different. There's simply too many versions. |
