Two years later and I still haven't seen it and don't plan on it.
Maybe if it was on TV for free... |

Okay, went back and watched it again for the first time in a year-and-a-half and I gotta say...
It doesn't suck. Honestly, I was a bit worried that the first time I watched it I enjoyed myself only due to lowered expectations from all the hate surrounding it, but you know what? It's still a fun, cool action movie. Yeah, Tatum is still a shit actor, but Reeves sure as hell didn't kill The Matrix for me. Yeah, a few of the special effects don't hold up on a high-def screen (first time I saw it was on a regular TV). I think the thing is that having seen IDW's reboot, Renegades, and Resolute kinda softened me up to seeing my favorite characters reimagined in different ways. I liked Ripcord. Wayens was a bit of a clown at first, but succeeded in making you laugh a bit more with him than at him, but he still came off as a genuinely heroic figure when the chips were down. That little scene after the attack on the PIT when Scarlet was recovering to the wounds to her face (and ego) he scored a lot of points (especially with her), and in a way, probably came off as a lot more sympathetic and likable than Duke, whose every dramatic scene fell on its face thanks to Tatum. Storm Shadow also was a bright spot. He was definitely a bad guy who wouldn't think twice about killing you (unless you were a woman), but had class, dignity, and a professional attitude, which made for a good exchange between him and Vosloo's Zartan, who was the polar opposite in almost every way and looked to have a damn good time doing it. I'm not sad to see Sienna Miller go. She was good, but not really memorable, and Eccleson's Destro came off as far too weak to be believable as the leader of such a huge, mad scheme. Having seen him in this and the Mummy, I wonder how Vosloo would have fared faking a Scottish accent. I won't bother comparing him to other Destros, he simply lacked the weight, the presence (physical and emotional) you really need from someone who's going to play a big bad. BTW, did anyone catch all the little sticker-gags at the end in the closing credits sequence? I completely missed that the first time around, and all of a sudden I see "Danger", "Panel Removal", and "No Step", tossed in very subtly around the sequence. Don't tell me there were no fans on that movie. That was a genuine treat to spot. I have to say, after seeing it again, I enjoyed it a littlebit more this time around. |

Rise of Cobra is not a good film, and if that's the basis of your criticism, that's fine. But anyone who criticizes it as a betrayal of the mythos or whatever is just a histrionic, self-aggrandizing ass. Sunbow was silly, the comics were silly, G.I. Joe is, was and always will be silly. |

Exactly. Fan criticisms might carry more weight if these nostalgic morons didn't get equally upset when a Flint figure is released with no gloves.
Or more accurately, they fall into the adult-fandom trap of expecting and hoping that the children's franchise they loved as children should "grow up" with them rather than dare attempt to remain targeted at children. As others said above, I agree with the notion that the movie's overall plot arc and "tone" was almost a pitch-perfect recreation of a Sunbow mini-series. I enjoyed it from that aspect, even if I had always been more a "Marvel comics Joe" guy than a "Sunbow Joe" guy. Still, while the comics were considerably more "mature" than the cartoon...they still weren't that mature.... |

im just sayn black ripcord and female dialtone....getdafahkoutta here! "heavy duty" rather than roadblock?! look, all this has been said (to death) so i wont go on about it; im fine with some artistic license but not at the cost of cannon. there was a sustainable compromise and they missed the mark by miles.
