...Since first seeing ROC I've re-watched the entire Sunbow ( my absolute first ever love of Joe ) series and somehow they both fit together brilliantly. Giant sub-fighter battles, Underwater bases with ninja fights over a wacky reactor and of course, robot insects that control your brain! ...
O/T: You reminded me of the time I was showing a friend of mine the old Japanese Toei Spider Man series from 1978. He looked at it and said "We may laugh at this now, but if I was a kid watching this in 1978, I would have been like 'This is the joint right here!'" Last edited by jcast; 11-16-2011 at 06:11 PM.. |

It's still problematic as a film. There are things to enjoy, but by no means is it a good film. However with a few tweaks, it would have been far better.
1. Recast Duke. This is what fears me most about GI Joe 2. Channing Tatum was an acting zombie in the ROC. Hopefully, he loosens up a bit in the sequel. 2. Lose the accellerator suits. Yeah, they were in the best action sequence of ROC. However, if they were replaced with Joes in a VAMP chasing the Cobra Humvee, it would have been just exciting and more on in-line with the Joe brand. 3. Get some color and individuality to the Joe and Cobra uniforms. All-black Joes fighting all-black Cobras doesn't tend to a visually interesting conflict nor interesting looking toys. Another fear I have for GI Joe 2. However, it was a big fan complaint of ROC, so I'm hoping Hasbro adjusted for the sequel. 4. Snake-Eye's vow of silence. It's a very small nitpick, but the choice to make SE's silence a choice is very odd. It makes him seem pouty (SE crosses his arms and refuses to talk) and less of a badass. His silence combined with his mysterious (we knew it was disfigured) face added to his whole character's mystique. Having him just be a normal guy who doesn't want to talk is just weak. And now that he's killed his master's killer (in his mind), why won't Snake-Eyes just be talking right at the beginning of GI Joe 2? It becomes a large point to hurdle. I suppose SE will have to discover immediately that Storm Shadow didn't kill their master and will have to immediately clamp his mouth shut again. Or he'll have to get injured (in whatever event kills the Alpha team?) which results in him not being able to talk...oh the irony! Just some simple adjustments that would have made a world of difference. I'm glad they're recasting or eliminating most of the cast, since they didn't make much of an impression. It's a shame that Miller isn't coming back as Baroness, since I thought she put up the best performance in ROC. Making her have a "good" backstory and turn at the end wasn't her fault. But she had the most fun in her role. |

Nothing good can come from a thread like this. We must not look back.

I enjoyed RoC. It wasn't my G.I. Joe and I didn't hold that against the movie which allowed me to enjoy it. Captain America wasn't the same Cap that I've read for years in the comics, but that doesn't mean I couldn't enjoy it as a Captain America movie. X-men First Class has 0 resemblance to the comics, but it was still an entertaining movie. RoC has some bad moments, things that could have been better, but every movie has that. It's not the best movie by any means, but it's entertaining to watch.

I think it is still a fun movie... I have my issues with it like most everyone else, but it's Hollywood what do you expect. Every book to movie I have ever seen doesn't hold water to the book, so I can't expect GI Joe Movies to hold water to the comics or 80s toon. It is what it is.

I think the ROC movie would have worked much better as an animated film. In fact parts of it appeared cartoony because of the terrible CGI. I don't mind CGI heavy movies, when it still bears some semblance of realism. My disdain for this movie is no secret, but had it been done as a cartoon, I'd probably have a different opinion of it.

The accl suits didn't bother me because it doesn't come off as any more bullshit than a lot of the stuff Hasbro and Sunbow pulled out of their asses. They might have looked a bit more realistic, but that's all. Number four was a non-issue to me. I still don't remember them even saying why he was mute in the movie, which means it wasn't that important. |
