Before I start I'd like to say this is just my opinion..Nothing more.

I think it will "suck". However I'm not under the Illusion that every thing needs to be as it was before. My favorite Joe story of all time was the WWII cross over with the Transformers. That was pretty far removed from the OG style as you could get, while still being recognizable.

I don't think any of us who think it will "suck" want a straight adaptation of the cartoon, or comic books. But This laser gun/ power suit crap is just insulting to my intelligence. I'm able to suspend disbelief for the sake of entertainment shure, but you gotta draw the line somewhere.

Well said. I'm not overly attached to the cartoon and I have no problems with changes being made to the characters to make them more realistic. In fact, my problem with the Sunbow cartoon when I was a kid was that it wasn't realistic enough.

If the screenshots we were seeing of this movie were more reminiscent of Black Hawk Down then I would be happy. It's the cheesy 90s-comic-book-movie look that's destroying my optimism about this film.

The movie might still be great even if you can't tell it's Duke, but why not give him a similar haircut and blonde hair like all the comics, cartoons, and figures that have come before. They could at least make him somewhat recognizable would that be too much to ask to look at the poster or a still shot of Duke and tell its Duke not the brown haired, buzz cut, goatee sporting guy we got. Thats my 2 cents.

Is he really THAT unrecognizable? My 10 year old brother recognized him. I mean, if you've ever seen any characters from GI Joe over your lifetime, it's not hard to figure out who is who even if they are wearing the same gear.

So Clark Kent/Superman and Peter Parker would have been a win if they had blonde hair and goatees in their respective movies.

What if they gave Scarlett blonde hair would you think that made sense. I just think it would have been simple to keep part of Dukes look more recognizable with blonde hair minus the goatee since from what we've seen they are not going to have familar costumes. I know we have not seen it all either so they might end up with some classic looking costumes.

In my opinion most casual Joe fans would not recognize this as Duke in the pics we have seen, hell some diehard fans would not if you just showed some of the pics and said who is this.

What feature in your opnion screams Duke is it the scar or the brown hair & buzz cut or the goatee or maybe the lack of a familar uniform(which we may see who knows) but from what we have seen, what makes this Duke other than being told or printing his name on the material we have seen. In my opinion in the pictures we have seen at least, there is nothing that screams Duke maybe in the movie it will scream Duke with the dialogue and acting, I sure hope so.

As an 'non-fan' of both properties who went to see those movies looking for a good, enjoyable two hours, I wouldn't have cared!

Which is what I've been saying about GI Joe. My sister will be going because she wants to see a good action film. She won't give a hoot that Duke hasn't got green pants, biege shirt and blonde hair, or that Vipers don't have mirrored face plates.

The vehicle designs for THUNDERBIRDS were very faithful to the originals (apart from Thunderbird 4!!), yet the film was still awful. Seems 'faithful designs' don't matter as much when it comes to the overall quality of a movie.

Again, I'll be judging GI Joe on the overall enjoyment I get from watching it. That enjoyment will not under any circumstances depend on whether Scarlett has a biege section on her costume or not. Things like that will be way down my list of "items that potentially 'spoil' a film".

I want to put my 2 cents in here before this thread is shut down for starting a riot between fellow Tankers. I am a LOOOOOOONG time Joe fan dating back to my first to figures in 1982 (straight arm Stalker & Snake Eyes!). Here's my analysis...

Costumes:
As far as the costumes go, it has been said in numerous interviews that the costumes we've seen (with the exception of Snake Eyes and Baroness) are battle armor and not their only costumes. They've been keeping those costumes close to their vests for the time being. Maybe those costumes will look similar to the original, maybe not, who knows? It is simply too soon to disregard a movie based off of costumes. That's just silly.

Casting:
Quaid as Hawk had me sold! Baroness is HOT. Ray Park is perfect for Snake Eyes. SO Duke is younger than he was in the toon/comic. And the casting of he & Cobra Commander make it seem like it could be a sequel to 'Stop Loss', so what, both of those actors were great in that movie as well.

Not sticking to source material:
I have bootleg copies of the entire toon series (Sunbow & DIC). I also have all of the comics (Marvel, Image, DD - OK, not Dark Horse, but do you blame me there?). I have watched and re-watched the toons... I have read and re-read the comics. They are both GREAT fun. They were also incredibly silly at times (in the case of the cartoon, silly most of the time). I think we have such a love for what was old that we overly glorify it.

I just think to say 'it sucks' before we see it is premature. Yes, it may very well suck. I haven't been happy with all of the images I've seen, but I'll still give it a chance before I discount it entirely.

I kept saying to myself, The Transformers movie is going to blow... the characters don't even look remotely the same as they did... I WAS WRONG! If Joe sucks, then so be it... If you want to continue saying it's going to suck, go for it, freedom of speech. I just think you should all see it before passing judgement.

In both my posts I never said the movie wasn't going to be good because of this. I just said it makes no sense to not give him something familar from all his previous incarnations, so maybe you need to read my posts again.

P.S. If everyone agreed on everything the HISS Tank would be pretty boring.

Edit:I liked Spider-Man 3 better than SM 2 and I liked Superman Returns also. You have to be kidding about Superman and Peter Parker having blonde hair would not have changed peoples perception of the characters.
If thats the case maybe Scarlett with a different hair color other than red would be cool with you also.

Its just for me when you see an action figure or poster/picture of Duke if he had the blonde hair and similar hair style you would be able to have even the casual fan recognize him without having to look for the name on the package or picture/poster.

I have a question for everyone. If we were shown the pictures we have seen so far from the movie and had no knowledge of what Joe and Cobra characters were in the script how many of us could correctly identify all the characters?

I doubt anybody would get them all correct and yes this doesn't mean the movie will suck because all the characters are not exactly like their comic, cartoon or figure look. I just wish they would have tried to get some more classic looks for some of the characters and Duke is the prime example he is one of the main character/images of G.I. Joe yet his movie counterpart looks nothing like the character/image of Duke and they might throw some classic looking costumes in the movie, but with the brown hair and goatee it still doesn't look like Duke to me maybe it does to others.

I still have hope this movie will be good and I will be there on opening night, but when you can't get the look of some key characters right to begin with it is going to be hard to see how they will get the movie right.
