Hasbro really needs to get the kids hooked again, we won't be able to support this line forever. In order to do this they need to give Cartoon Network the rights to show renegades. I had my cousins son visit a few months ago, and he had never heard of Renegades, I let him watch a few episodes on Youtube. And He loved them, he asked what channel they came on I said the HUB he said whats that.
So yes go all in on the movie, and make sure it's done right. With decent figures... The Children are our future. |

If you're spending millions of dollars on advertising and only getting hundreds of thousands back in additional revenue, you are losing money.
Hence...virtually NO toymakers or brands (not just Hasbro/G.I. Joe) advertise toys/action figures on television anymore. Particularly since no network is reaching even remotely as large an audience as the broadcast networks did with Saturday morning cartoons. Put in the common-sense, mildly business-savvy way: If all it took to boost your brand to A-list prominence was throwing commercials on TV, Hasbro would be doing it. The truth is clearly that it doesn't work that way anymore, or more accurately that the expense of the commercials (Both producing them and buying airtime for them) outweighs the benefits gained. Even putting commercials on the Hub isn't ideal for Hasbro...because every 30 seconds they "buy" for themselves is money that they're NOT receiving from an outside advertiser. In other words, it's stealing potential revenue for the network, or taking money from one pile and putting it into another. There's no net gain. Transformers is one of the biggest selling toys on the market right now thanks to the movie, and the only ad I saw for them were a few in May promoting the Cyberverse play pattern (the "fit in your pocket, universe of stuff to collect" pattern we see in Bakugan and Pokemon). Kre-O is getting a HUGE push right now, but that is also a new brand going against Lego, who basically own 75 percent of the building block aisle. The movie will reach more kids because not only will Hasbro do some advertising, but the studios will be pushing the film (and Hasbro can piggyback off that). That's why Joe 2 is so important right now with Joe's retail space continuing to decline, despite some of the best toy products on the market short of Star Wars.

Second, so long as Hasbro is a "competitor" to Cartoon Network via the Hub, I do NOT see them dealing with Hasbro's properties again until the channel folds, which won't happen for years given the investment Hasbro has made. Don't forget these shows will likely be coming to DVD this fall or spring, which will likely help spread the word of them. But remember, Cartoon Network wasn't common on basic cable packages until about 10 years ago, before which it helped launched Gundam and the second Voltron series despite not being on basic cable.

Not only is traditional advertising too costly, even when something does generate strong interest or becomes hugely popular, there is no longevity guaranteed. People will jump to the next big thing. The world today has an attention span that doesn't last the length of a commercial, let alone a movie.
So what will help GI Joe? Nothing, really. It already is a fairly popular line - just not popular enough. I don't pay attention to other toy lines, so I really don't know how disgruntled their fan bases are. It would be nice to see the line get handed over directly to some talented true fans with a vision to perpetuate the line for several more decades and give the adult collectors what they want, while generating interest in younger age groups. But money always dictates.

Sadly, revitalizing the brand won't be done with a movie and it wont happen through will power.
They need to return to the glory days of GI Joe...and for that, we need that 80's economy...so there you have it...nada. |
