Hi guys. I've been lurking here for a while. I have to say, I'm utterly astounded by what you've accomplished here. This is, hands down, one of the most polished and appealing Joe news websites on the net today.
One point that I have been investigating vigorously over the past few years is the development of the impending live action G.I. Joe movie. I haven't found any threads or forums dedicated to this here. Perhaps I'm simply looking in the wrong place. If so, I apologize and I hope the admin will forgive me and redirect me to the proper place to post this. What follows is my reaction to many fans of the genre as well as producers involved who have argued that G.I. Joe as an American based team cannot "hack it" as far as selling a film to the world at large due to the current political climate. I apologize for how lengthy it is, but I'm sure if you take the time to read it, you will understand my sentiment and why I go on so long. I'm pleased to meet you all and I hope I'm not overstepping any bounds. --- A real American hero. What does that mean? I think that the G.I. Joe comics from Marvel endeavored to answer that question as honestly and realistically as possible. It showed all opposing viewpoints. It showed the crazy young guys who didn't really understand why they had joined, whooping and hollering about "kill kill kill!" It showed people who joined to pay for college. It showed guys who just wanted to serve their country. A certain bit of flag waving is involved when you bring up history and the ideas upon which the U.S. were founded. It's unavoidable. Still, if you remember the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, it becomes pretty clear. The current climate in the Middle East has a lot of people the world over, including fully half (and perhaps more) of the citizens of the United States at odds with the current administration. Many times, this disagreement devlops into harsh criticism of those who chose to serve in the armed forces. Several people on this board have served, and God-willing we'll be able to gather up some members who are serving currently. After the debacle in Vietnam, many men who had joined up simply to do what had been taught to them as the right thing were greeted as monsters, spat upon and called "baby-killers." Make no mistake. War is Hell. There is nothing glamorous, adventurous or appealing about the execution of any war. We must remember however, that the world we live in today is the current product of countless wars that have taken place throughout history. Perhaps the reason that there is so much controversy over fighting any war is that we, as a society, perhaps a global one, are starting to outgrow the concept of war. I hope and pray that this is true. However, in any age, there are throwbacks. There are decision-makers or "deciders" who find themselves steeped in history rather than being capable of trusting in good will marching towards the future. And in any age, there are truly evil men. No, there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Still, there can be no denying that that nations now ousted and executed leader was a truly evil man. Perhaps he did not reach the status of an Adolf Hitler, but how many bodies do you need to justify going to war? I believe that the biggest problems faced are the shortsightedness of the few who lead and the lack of understanding and overwhelming apathy of the citizens. If more citizens raised their hands and stepped out to vote and really took the time to understand what was happening in our nations and truly did their part to see that the right people were elected, that the right causes were championed, the world might be that much closer to that lasting peace. As God is my witness, when I stood on the parade deck on Parris Island and the Battalion Commander stood before us for final inspection before graduation, he asked the members of our platoon one by one why we joined the Marines. Answers ranged from "to wear the uniform" to "to pay for college" to "to serve my country." Perhaps I am naive, or perhaps I simply see myself as more of a global citizen, but when the Battalion Commander stepped in from of me, I presented my rifle, and when asked why I joined, I answered with confidence and a clear understanding of what I was saying, "to fight for freedom wherever there's trouble SIR!" He returned my rifle, eyed me up and down, and then, letting his tone soften a bit, replied with a hearty "OO-RAH!" I joined because I truly felt that it was my duty. It was an equation that I had considered for a long time. The U.S. is unlikely to be invaded any time in the near future. However, if we did not have a powerful enough military to guard our shores, that would not necessarily be the case. History shows a pattern of conquest by the strong over the weak, or the stronger over the strong. As long as humans are capable of greed, there will always be someone somewhere who wants to take what others have, and who has the will to kill for it. I joined, as backward and as contrary as it is to my views against violence and conflict, because I felt that it was my obligation, my duty, to stand up side by side with those who through out history have sacrificed. Sometimes it is a sacrifice of time, sometimes it is a sacrifice of comfort, or a limb, or the quality of life, or even the ultimate sacrifice: life itself. This is a very real decision that these men and women make. It should not be taken lightly. If the public at large is so concerned with the rights and well-being of these men, I believe that more should be done for the Veteran's themselves. A parade is nice, but if you're in a wheelchair, or missing a limb, or an eye, or even other parts of yourself to embarassing to talk about, then a parade, a special day is little comfort. Most veterans, especially the disabled, simply want a job or the means to make their lives work now that they are back in the civilian world. Medicine, prosthetics, the ability to support themselves. In short, a little dignity. G.I. Joe, as written by Larry Hama was the most balanced story of fiction based on certain uncomfortable realities that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It's a sprawling 155 issue epic. The characters aren't heroes because they are politically correct, nor because they have super-powers. They are heroes because they are people doing a thankless job for a world that sometimes appreciates and often denigrates them for it. In that respect, G.I. Joe, despite the sci-fi bent, was one of the most realistic comics out there. Unlike the cartoon, people died. Often unceremoniously and never glamorously. It was the M*A*S*H* of Marvel Comics with all the sweeping grandeur and epic excitement of Star Wars. This movie should not simply be Star Wars. Neither should it be Blackhawk Down. It should be a responsible mixture of both. It should be a sweeping adventure that also responsibly demonstrates the realities of war and combat. Getting on a ship, or rappelling out of a helicopter, or flying a fighter jet, or scuba diving, or parachuting are all exciting and adventurous things that the average person does not get to do in their life. There is a price to pay along with that excitement, If your job is to go into a hostile place and risk death, you do what you have to to keep your sense of humor, your sanity, and your humanity. Some get hopelessly lost along the way. Some come back home to find that they are more able to treasure something as simple as going out to Denny's for a mediocre cup of coffee and look at the smiles of friends and family. No one has all the answers. No on has a fully rounded perspective. But most importantly, no one has a monopoly on scruples. That's reality. __________________

We shall see how it all goes down. I have a feeling it will be done just like Transformers and will turn out fine.

I try to stay out of politics. Its a savage beast that can tear best friends apart.I was in the comic shop the other day and this girl came in that was in the army. She made the comment "if your broken, the army doesn't want you.If they break you and can't fix you, they don't want you" So,what does that say about our own govt? There is a line out of a ministry song that speaks more truth than it should "When its time to collect, its only heroes who pay"
I look forward to the day when my kids don't have to worry about wars....sadly,it will never happen.Man is driven by war,its the nature of the beast. |

Amen brother........Amen
It's always a pleasure to meet a fellow soldier and someone who shares my feelings on joe fandom. Larry Hama created every bit as much of a universe as george lucas did but he did so playing it much closer to reality. As you know he based many of the characters and situations on his own experiences in vietnam and that always made it more "real" to me as a kid and even now as an adult. G.I. Joe was an integral part of establishing my sense of value and honor as I was growing up and that is why I am still a die-hard fan of the mythos. That is why I chase down the comics, figures, and am rabid about this film project! I grew up idolizing my uncle who was a marine aviator in vietnam. He was shot down in a bombing run over hanoi in 68' and was a POW for 5 years. Even after living through that hell, he was the jolliest, friendliest mountain of a man you would ever meet and never held anything against anyone. He was a soldier, and I knew from the time I could walk, that I wanted to be as much like him as possible! G.I.Joe just made it alot more fun :-) Welcome aboard man, you are among friends here. |

I just they dont screw it up & cast George Clooney as duke or some b.s. like that... or make snakeeyes look nothing like himself.. & have him be able to speak... I hope they keep it true to the cartoon... Sean Conery would be an awesome vioce for Destro... fit him perfect... I was wondering that with all the special effects today... is it possible to do voice over using FX... like using the real Chris Latta's voice to do Cobra Commander... that wouild be insane... I bet its possible... & they should stick to the story as it progresses... not have all the joe charactors into the 1st movie... like serpentor right off the bat...but rather start off with the creation of the JOES when COBRA surfaces as a threat to the world... starting with the 1st orignal JOES then maybe save the charactors that appeared later for sequels?? sounds good to me
