I have no particular attachment to the Duke character, but neither do I loathe him as many Joe fans do. Since I have no strong feelings for the character one way or the other, I keep going back and forth as to who I want him to be in my collection/Joeverse/dioverse/whatever.
I recently decided that Duke should be very old and very angry: JoeDios - JoeDios Dioramas, Photos, collections, Reviews & Files - A Different Take On Duke Anger is something of a running theme with my Duke experiments, as something about this simple, uninspired kitbash (RoC General Hawk body + RoC K-Mart 5-pack Duke head) struck me as rather cold and menacing: JoeDios - JoeDios Dioramas, Photos, collections, Reviews & Files - Madly in Anger with You Meanwhile, as I was contentedly kitbashing away this morning, I reflected that, while I’m a good-looking rebel who lives by his own rules and courageously disregards the histrionic teeth-gnashing of his fellow nerds, it might nonetheless be fun to incorporate the fandom’s disdain for Duke into his personality. To wit: What if everyone hates Duke? But not you lot—I mean maybe the Joes hate Duke. Or more intriguing still, perhaps some Joes see him as an inspiring leader they’d follow into Hell, while others utterly despise him as a pretty boy pup with a death wish and an ego the size of the Flagg. Or maybe they all respect his courage or leadership skills or fighting prowess and the like, but everyone also hates him on a personal level ‘cause he’s a self-righteous dick or whatever. Essentially, then, I’m thinking that Duke is John Cena, in that maybe the crowd boos him and maybe the crowd cheers him, but he’s never met with apathy. The “crowd” in this case is comprised of his fellow Joes rather than a wrestling audience, and the cheers and boos are of course theoretical, but I maintain that the analogy is sound. But that’s just where I stand this morning; I’ll probably change my mind about who or what Duke’s supposed to be a dozen times between now and Christmas. In the meantime, how do you feel about Duke? Do you love him? Do you hate him? Are you sort of politely indifferent to him, like me? What are Duke’s personality traits and skills, in your mind? Does he have any specific antagonists, or does he just want to shoot anything adorned in Cobra logos? Which continuity do you pull from, where Duke is concerned? The Sunbow cartoon? The classic comics? One of the modern comic book series? The Resolute cartoon? The Rise of Cobra film? A combination of the above? Let’s talk about Duke. |

I think I'm with you in polite indifference. I have no strong feelings one way or the other-- at any given moment in any given continuity he might do something I like or something I hate, but neither one to such a frequency as to form a lasting opinion.
Maybe it's my general indifference to the 'All American Boy/Man' thing. There's enough overall in the way of good points/moments that I never really develop a disdain, but too much in the way of blond and square-jawed poster boy for patriotism to really catch my interest. (although, I love Captain America, and he's about as blond, square-jawed, and patriotic as it's possible to get... but he's also, you know, formerly a congenitally sick poor son of Irish immigrants who was really into art, and now hangs out with Iron Man... so... that's probably got a lot to do with it. I *didn't* like him when I was a kid/teenager.)

Is that Tunnel Rat from Renegades in your signature? (I've still never seen the series). If so, I love the redesign they gave him.

I wouldn't necessarily say "old and angry", but I would say this:
As the First Sergeant he is likely to be older than most of the team. He'd probably be around 35 to 40 years old. Not old by any means, but older than the average 18 to 24 year old troop. Also, as the First Sergeant he is also something of a disciplinarian (which could easily be mistaken for angry when he's bitching at someone that isn't living up to standards). He's the guy that will be making sure everyone is up-to-snuff. With an elite unit, this shouldn't be that hard, because everyone in the unit would be a top-notch trooper. |

I liked him in the comics, hated the ground he walked on in the Sunbow Cartoon (because Sunbow had the great idea of matching him up with Scarlett because they had no idea how to use Snake Eyes properly), and well the RoC Duke... couldn't stand Channing Tatum as him either. He would have made a better green shirt or Cobra Trooper that dies within the first 20 minutes of the movie.

Yes 'tis, with the addition of the oh-so-memey hipster glasses... which is the extent of my screencap-altering skills... which apparently I can only use to make horrible pun-filled macros... But yeah. I love Renegades Tunnel Rat.

I would rather talk about North Carolina and Harrison Barnes!
