What are you talking about? The Dreadnoks were constantly in the comics. Zartan was one of the three or four most important bad guys, Zarana was in the comic all the time, and Road Pig was always by her side, and the rest of the Dreadnoks showed up regularly. They were there when Cobra Island was created, they were there for the Cobra Civil War, and they ran Broca Beach.
In my mind, the Dreadnoks are not directly a part of Cobra. Cobra Commander uses them to do stuff he doesn't want to come back to Cobra. No one in Cobra likes them, or thinks they should ever be associated with, except for Cobra Commander.

I hated the way the Dreadnoks were used as comic relief in the comics and especially the cartoon. I understand the cartoon was light-hearted, Saturday morning fun and overall the Cobra organization was portraited as bumbling.
But in the comics, as I recall, the three main Noks - Buzzer, Ripper, and Torch - were seen as borderline Three Stooges-ish and were willing to do any job for a case of grape soda. I would like IDW to re-invent them asa hardcore biker gang loosely affiliated with Cobra strictly through Zartan's involvement. They should be a more formidable group, not bumbling morons. In my Joeverse, I view the 'Nok's role as most who already posted do. I found this artwork of the Dreadnok clan from Devil's Due's time publishing GI Joe. |

In my joe verse the nok's are like the bike gang Sons of Anarchy. They are aware of the fact that they do jobs for cobra and have started to branch out and recruit more gang members. Unlike cobra they don't have the numbers that cobra or the joes have. They realize that there is power in numbers so they have begun recruiting.

There was actually a pretty good episode of the Sunbow cartoon where the Dreadnoks were used to increase the crime and incite riots in a particular neighborhood. The brought gangs together to cause problems all to make a local politician look bad enough that a Cobra paid politician could take his place and "clean up the town." The Renegades cartoon used them as biker thugs terrorizing a town in classic Sergio Leone terms.
That's how I picture the Dreadnoks. Guys sent in to cause trouble or do the dirty little jobs the professional military members and leaders of Cobra wouldn't want to touch. In my own story, it's the Dreadnoks who kill off former GI Joe member Frank Castle's family. Making it look like a gangland accident instead of a Cobra hit.

Please someone update me on the history of this Character. I understand she's from the image line and is the daughter of Zartan?

I'm thinking I'm going to need a lot more 1:18 scale choppers here. Thrasher (Thunder my ass) will get the Thunder Machine, and I think Road Pig will have to ride shotgun because I can't picture him on his own bike. Are the other members all bikers too?

In later comics, she proved to be an capable leader, and was respected among the 'noks, although Zartan wasn't always the best father.

Interest in the Dreadnoks is a fairly new thing for me but I've seen this discussed elsewhere on the Tank and it got me thinking.
At this point I like the idea of them being guns for hire but under Major Blood's leadership rather than Zartan's. By using the Major you get a built in Australian connection for their backstory. Disgraced SAS leader pulls together a team of mercs from his former command and they set out to see what trouble they can find. Keep Zartan as a lone wolf like Firefly or Wraith or maybe have him bring his siblings and offspring into the family business but I don't like the idea that someone with his background- master of disguise, super assassin, would be leading a biker gang. |

Yes, she was born from a relationship with the man who was beginning to call himself Zartan. She began hanging out with the Dreadnoks in the hopes of confronting her father, and was shown to be a very capable street fighter. When she finally met her father, she challenged him to a throw down, in which she predictably lost but shared that she was Zartan's daughter. After he checked it out, he accepted that indeed he was her father - even though Zarana was quite skeptical - and offered to let her be a part of the Dreadnoks even though it would be a difficult path (particularly due to Zarana). Her final test of membership was to betray her boyfriend and tell him to leave the Dreadnok camp.
In later comics, she proved to be an capable leader, and was respected among the 'noks, although Zartan wasn't always the best father. Thanks BTW for the history. |
