I think there are some interesting misconceptions about the Dreadnoks here; first of all, why would you picture them as American white trash? Let alone the association with white-supremacy? I don't think you were saying in your Joeverse, the Dreadnoks are white supremacists, but still, I find it odd that American History X reminds you of the Dreadnoks. Pardon me for saying so, but it seems like a dangerously America-centric postulation, neglecting the fact that people from other places around the world can be different.
I'm not sure when you were born, but in the early 80's the Mad Max movie franchise was pretty big, and the Australian dystopian imagery would be very influential of various forms of media for much of the decade. The Dreadnoks were, from my understanding, initially conceived as being Australian. Furthermore, though the motorcycle gangs in Australia may or may not have been influenced in one way or another by the American motorcycle culture, no doubt the Australian interpretation was skewed by their own social norms and customs, becoming an entirely different culture from the one that inspired it. My father, a biker himself in his younger days, actually traveled to Australia in the late 70's and swears up and down that the first Mad Max movie very accurately depicts the typical Aussie bikers as much as Easy Rider depicts the typical American bikers, though from their own respective periods. As for my idea of how they fit into the Joeverse, I would say they have an inkling as to what Cobra is and what role (if any) they play in it, but I believe they would be more concerned with their own interests, such as how they could benefit (such as money and protection). Furthermore, if you take GI Joe seriously enough to spend 30 minutes writing a deconstruction of the Dreadnoks like me, then you take this way to seriously. I'm leaving now. |

I like the idea of only the leader siblings knowing they work for Cobra as well, but in my verse they don't at first. In my Joeverse they are just a bikey gang ran by Zarana. Now I don't know about in America but here in Australia bikey gangs are one of the top echilon of organised crime. They make money from drugs, guns and even murder and in my verse Cobra Commander can see a need for this type of unsaviory work to be done and enlisting the Noks makes it so he can dabble in that world without there being a conection back to Cobra. I could go on for ages about how they end up with Cobra and such but I'll leave it there for now.

I'm happy you guys are finally getting all your Dreadnoks, but I don't get why so many people like them. I mean for me Joe is mainly about two things... Military/Para-military and Ninjas. Even as a kid I never really liked the Dreadnoks... they were like an outlaw biker gang that I could not fit into my little military world. LOL. Having said that... I liked Cobra-la... yah, I know... they are even harder to explain than Dreadnoks. LOL.
The only Dreadnok I liked was Road Pig, but only because I used to pretend he was Hawk from the WCW Road Warriors. LOL.

I liked the Dreadnoks in the comic because of the comic relief, combined with an edge of real nastiness. I mean, Buzzer and Thrasher are clearly both psychopaths, the kind who could star in some kind of nasty snuff film or something. Because so many of the Cobras really weren't that plausible, the Dreadnoks, for all their goofy incompetance were believable. I could totally see them show up in a G.I.Joe move driving techicals. |

Comics basically only used the dreadnoks once. (per requirements) & Zartan was a gun for hire.
My view of how/why Dreadnoks are used comes from the cartoon. Destro always seemed to think Zartan & his Dreadnoks were beneth him & didn't understand why Cobra Commander employed them. My theory Zartan knew who Cobra Commander was, & may have been there from the very beginning. This also fit well with the comic version. In My Joeverse, Dreadnoks are hired muscle often used before the offical formation of a cobra mlitary. They are also used as a recruiting tool to find more valuable members to promote into cobra. |

I never used to like the Dreadnoks because I didn't understand how they would fit in my "Joeverse". What could a bunch of bikers offer a terrorist organization like Cobra?
Then I started watching Sons of Anarchy, and it made sense to have a group like the Dreadnoks act as couriers or mules for weapons and contraband. They are a lot less conspicuous than a masked Officer flying around in a FANG. I also never cared for the fact that they were more often than not portrayed as imbecilic comic relief, and don't use them as such.

i like the dreadnoks, being i am from the early 80's it was a road warrior thing.
hasbro was more focused on pumping out as many figures as they could once g i joe took off. and thus being hasbro was more focused on making toys and making money other than being worried what figures fit into place. g i joe has 100's of characters with all different personalities, therefore allowing more people in the real world being able to relate with characters that fall into ones interest. it just so happens 30years later those ideas and characters are still around and on topic. the only differece is that hasbro isnt creating new figures on a large magnitude.they are basically cashing in on the ideas and creations they made from 20 +years back including repaints. the whole idea is how to make money with spending as little money as possible. so back to the dreadnoks. in the 80's punk rock was happening and died in the 80's as well. so needless to say, g i joe was cashing in on punk rock while it was somewhat hot. 20+ years later after punk is dead, it just quit isnt as popular. the fashon may still be around, but not the attitude. so i would imagine that if you are not one to have that mind set and attitude of road warrior style, then chances are you probably dont like the dreadnoks.

In my mind, the Dreadnoks are not directly a part of Cobra. Cobra Commander uses them to do stuff he doesn't want to come back to Cobra. No one in Cobra likes them, or thinks they should ever be associated with, except for Cobra Commander. |
