Hi everyone
I've recently caught the G.I Joe bug and am looking for some guidance. I live in London in the UK and when I was growing up in the 70's it was all about Action Man over here. I've got a decent collection of Eagle Eye figures, hence the user-name. I bought a copy of the 2009 live action movie which got me curious and then got hold of a copy of G.I Joe Resolute which gave me the bug. So the question is where do you guys reckon I should start with comics and/or graphic novels? All I know about G.I Joe is what I've seen in the two movies mentioned above. All assistance is greatly appreciated. |

Comics: Start with G.I. Joe Cobra IDW
Cartoons: M.A.S.S. Device and Revenge of Cobra and if your collecting the toys just buy the DVD packs on eBay that include the DVD's. That's a good start.

I almost hate to tell you to start with IDW's Cobra titles. They are the best Joe comics ever done, so anything else you pick up will pale. However, if you want the cream of the crop, that is where to go. Nice to meet you!

Shout Factory has them. Shout! Factory - G.I. Joe Last edited by sharky; 03-05-2011 at 07:36 PM.. |

You have to go with the marvel run of the comics to start.

Agreed
The Marvel run is great... you can get the Marvel trades reprinted by IDW now. Check your local comic shop or try Amazon.com |

id say why not start with the classic A Real American Hero cartoon done by Sunbow in the mid eighties.
It has been released by Shoutfactory and covers season 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 2.0. Things didn't go wrong until the movie cam out after season 2.0 and then they switched the manufacturer of the toon to a different company, DIC (which I'm not a fan of but some are). IDW has released the old Marvel comic run in TPB, so those are a good place to start with the comics. They are up to #12 now. each covers 10issues of the old run. I like the new IDW comic run as well. There is GI Joe, GI Joe Origins, and Cobra to catch upon. I wouldnt mess with the movie comics at all. I enjoyed the movie, but there is much better stuff to checkout.

yes, the marvel run IDW TPB are best bought on Amazon, they are usually cheaper than the cover price.

Welcome! And yeah that's my advice as well start with the Marvel trades...I honestly wouldn't bother trying to nail down indivial issues its simply way to costly and harder to run down and in the end your still getting the same material. I myself am an odd guy while I think the Marvel run is likely the best stuff Joe has produced I actually like the DDP run and the IDW runs as well. But then again I also like Reloaded and Extreme as well. Its a deep well lots of areas to explore. |
