Am I confusing things? Wasn't Joe Colton supposed to be the 12 inch GI Joe who was the Adventure Team Commander? I thought it was established that that's who he was. Am I getting it wrong? I noticed on the file cards the ATC figure has a birthplace of Flushings, NY while Colton is in RI. I thought this was what Hasbro established when the released the original Joe Colton 3 3/4 back during RAH. Maybe Marvel or DDP picked up on it too?
So am I getting something screwed up or was Colton supposed to be the original 12 inch Joe who I thought was the same as Adventure Team Commander? |

Don't agonize about it too much. Joe Colton was a mail away nod of the head to us 12" fans from the 60's soldier, the AT Commander and Jane made a cameo in the ARAH Marvel run as a fun way to tip the hat to the 70's incarnation too. Then things bogged down a little as people tried to establish a continuity that tied everything together neatly. Joe Colton wasn't necessarily the AT Commander, just implied and made to look more and more like him as time went on.
Nowadays he has more of a name than in the 70's (only the foreign Action Man, Action Team and Group Action Joes had names). Don't read into it more than that, the only constant from the very first concept was Ace, and that name was dropped while still a concept in the 60's only to be resurrected in the 80's. Skip and Rocky never got their due, nor did Mike Triumph, or Mike Powers. And there was more than 1 fuzzy headed muscle bodied man of action back then, so maybe Colton was one of many, or the first of many. And he can be what you decide he is. |

I always look at it like this.
Colton was the original G.I. Joe, at some point he either stepped aside, retired chose whatever you want. They replaced him with the Adventure Team who if you check their filecards are all from differant cities and none are from Colton's hometown. Eventually the Adventure Team retired or whatever, and then in the 80's we got the expanding Joe team. |

The marvel run definately establishes Colton as part of the Adventure Team (issue 127). I like to think of him as the commander since he was appointed head of the first joe team by the president (issue 152).

It goes all the way back to the beginning with Colton, no beard, no Adventure Team, No Dive Suit, No Parachute, No Camo, No Kung Fu grip. Colton is the ORIGINAL.

Wasn't Skip "remade" as Cutter in 1984 (hence his filename as "Skip A. Stone")?

According to the guys at the GIJCC, the Adventure Team Commander is NOT Joe Colton, nor was he ever meant to be.

Colton was definitely the Adventure Team Commander as far as the Marvel Comics go. I'm pretty sure that Colton is also supposed to be the original 12 inch Green Beret. The Hall of Fame Colton is clearly based on the Green Beret. I've awlays figured the Green Beret and AT Commander were the same guy, as the early versions of the AT commander's uniform is the same as the Green Beret.
(I own an original GI Joe Green Beret. One of the few vintage 12 inch figures I own. It was something of a Holy Grail for me for some time, and I got a good deal on it. missing a few pieces though. No belt, no rifle, no grenades and no scarf. I replaced those pieces with some repro stuff, but it looks pretty good!) |
