Every now and then, I like many others here on the tank break ranks and look to ebay to fulfill our "plastic" addiction. Whether it be to fill a gap in our collection, customizing needs etc. One thing that has always blown my mind is why is it that loose figures sometimes not even complete get bid up and sell more than the carded one? Can anybody explain this?

Are we talking current or vintage figures? Shipping is 4 bucks less usually, buying current figures for high prices on eBay is like day trading. You never know how common or rare figures will get in a years time.

Yeah I have seen that a bunch of times. I always figured that open figures go for more cuz people dont want to open figures especially if they are older.

I don't know about this when it comes to joes, but I do notice this when it comes to Star Wars figures, especially the POTF2 line.
Those always sell better loose than they do carded. It might have something to do with shipping though. As far as Star Wars POTF2 figures go I bet that there are more carded ones than loose ones anyway because everyone and their mother were buying those up and keeping them carded because they thought that they would be "worth" something someday. Yeah that was smart thinking. They should go hang out with the Beanie Baby people. Buy gold instead people!

Referencing the day trading, im a contrarian trader always was and will be, SHORT THE FLOAT!!! I think we are all hoping that these MOC figs we are stock piling will be worth some loot in 25 years, especially if we look to the past and kick ourselves for not keeping any of our figs on card or even purchasing 2 of each . One for play, one for the development of ebay. Personally i think we're all setting up for a disappointment if this is the case. |

This was my thought as well. I don't think it has everything to do with the price, but I think it may play a part.

personally I usually buy one of each not to sell the carded ones but to have something to pass on to the kids down the road although I do have some that are more than just 2 MOC, and usually saves me in a couple birthday or christmas instances when I can just pull some of the mint on box and or card stuff to just give away to my nephews or any of my friends kids. it was never about the value of the mint item I already did that with comics and got really tired of that crap, remember the Infamous McFarlane SPIDERMAN 1 from the 90s with multiple covers and the Jim Lee X-MEN with variants that everyone had to have.

I always try to buy 2 of each, one carded and one to open (25th ann only). I keep the carded not to sell, but because of the packaging it's like a nice little trip down memory lane. The POC, ROC figures I only buy the ones that interest me (or cool in my eyes) and open them up. I have no interest what-so-ever in reselling any of my figures. The only way I would sell these things is if I was completely broke and had no income coming in.

The price flux has more to do about the psychology of EBay then the actual value of given item. People do not enjoy being out bid.
