I have been watching the original five part 83' series on TV over the past few days ,and i noticed a few things that left me scratching my head ?
Were some of the vehicles in the mini series an influence on toys released a year later ,for example the mini subs used by the Joes to dive for the "heavy water" look very similar to the SHARC flying sub used by Deep Six .And the VTOL jets used in part four by Destro look very similar to the Cobra Rattler . I know that Hasbro probably had the designs for the SHARC and the Rattler ready in 1983 before they released them in 84' ,so did they plant future toys in the cartoon ,or did they model the toys after the cartoon designs ? Also there are some characters i'm puzzled on too ,the snow hermit who rescued Snake Eyes with the Scottish accent ,he has the same dark paint around his eyes like Zartan ,does he have actually have a name and could it have been Zartan in disguise ?I know Zartan wasn't a character in 83' ,but because the canister was booby trapped once it got back to Joe headquarters ,makes me wonder if Snake Eyes was set up after he left the cavern when Major Blood let him go so easily "because he was a ticking time bomb" due his radioactive contamination ,but Cobra saw an oppurtunity for espionage .i think it would have been a great way to intruduce Zartan but then again it was a kid's cartoon so they had to keep the story fairly simplified . And the Cobra "shock troops" beamed into space by the mass device to take out the Joe satellite ,were they ever meant to be figures in the toy line ,i know in 83' Gi Joe didn't have any space stuff but they would have made cool toys ? I know i am probably over analyzing the cartoon a little bit ,but i thought maybe some Joe experts could shed some light on my questions . Last but not least ,the giant slave gladiator that was liberated by the Joes in the last part of the series ,would have made an interesting member of the team and the slave girl too ,because both would have a a deep hatred and a score to settle with Cobra after their people were enslaved . |

I think the animators and the comic illustrators probably had early designs, because the Rattler showed up early in the comic and it was a little off from the final design as well.
The mountain man that saves Snake-Eyes was not Zartan. I think they put the black under his eyes to emphasize his blindness. And yes. You are over analyzing the cartoon. ;)

Again, I agree with Freedom here.
I think the animators had some early designs/concepts of vehicles that were planned at the time so they made some of those. As for the one off characters, the animators would make a lot of those up for the story at hand and were even asked by Hasbro to stop using at least one of them (Sparks) since he would compete with screentime for other communications Joes that had an actual toy out (Breaker. Dial-tone) So I doubt the Mountain Man was Zartan |

I think your over thinking man. You gotta realize this show was for kids and was made in the 80's. And if I'm not mistaken the space troops looked alot like eels at least an early concept of em

The animation from that mini-series was used for the Rattler toy commercial.
