The subject of action figure interpretation style has been on my mind a bit lately ever since news came down from Hasbro recently that the 2011 figures based on the Renegades cartoon would be interpreted in the same manner as the more 'realistic' look of the PoC line. My question to fandom is, how can you possibly interpret the animation designs as 'realistic' and not have the figures created look essentially like repaints?
Hasbro got away with repaints on the Resolute interpretations for some figures (i.e., Roadblock, Gung-Ho, Destro, etc.) and IMHO they were the weakest figures from that line. When the designers decided to stay more true to the root of that character (i.e., Resolute Duke v2, Stalker, Beachhead) the designs worked really well and maintained the 'feel' of their animation designs much better. So, how is Renegades going to work with the PoC line concept applied and look anything like the animation designs that many of us are growing to really enjoy? |

That is my worry also. I love the style and want my figures to represent that same look. I'm still surprised that they are going this route. I really hope we don't get resolute type figures because I really did not care for them. Ill hold judgement till we see them at toyfair, but I fully admit I'm worried.

While I see your point, and agree, I'd much rather have more PoC figures than Renegades figures.

I enjoy the show. I see more people warming up to it. And I know Hasbro said it was doing good, but (as they always do) they looped it in there with Transformers. TF is much bigger and popular and while Joe may have decent ratings, TF is probably really taking off. So to hype both brands and the new show Hasbro says TF and Joe are really hot. I would just like to see the Hub or Hasbro state officially that "Renegades"--without any mention of Transformers-- is doing really good in the ratings.
But by far I see more people preferring the art style of Resolute and the aesthetics of the toys to be more realistic, less cartoonish, etc. I think after Rise of Cobra, Hasbro was a little more hesitant to jump both feet into the water and didn't want to change things too dramatically. I imagine most people will be pleased to see Renegades toys in the same vein of POC in design. In fact it was because of the negative feedback within the community that Hasbro decided to keep the toys the same. Or nearly the same. I personally remember seeing a lot of "If the toys look like the clone wars, I'm done collecting." That was a big eye opener for the big H. While this brand is mainly focused towards kids, if you lose your collectors, the backbone of the brand, and there is fall out with the kids, then you have nothing. Or no one. I think it's going to work just fine. I think Duke, Flint, Tunnel Rat and Roadblock will all be easily and instantly recognizable for both collectors and kids. And there will not be repaints (at least for the first few waves) because these versions of the characters are unique and different from past versions. There's plenty of Flint's, but none in a sweater vest and kaki jeans and so forth. Will they be a hit with both collectors and kids? Who knows? Will the cartoon? Again, who knows? But every new advent that this brand takes is a risk. We'll just have to wait it out and see.

Again, the general worry (at least posted thus far) is that the designs will lose the 'essential-ness' of the Renegades designs that Clem Sauve and other talented artists have come up with and will instead be mutated into something more resembling what went wrong with the Resolute line. |

May I ask why? Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I'd like to hear your justification.

The idea I don't understand is I keep reading that went with realistic style because collectors said they wanted it that way. Ok so your saying that your going to go this route based on what collectors( most of who don't like the renegades look). That's the part that is odd to me. If the target is the kids and a whole new audience then go for it then. It just seems like Hasbro kinda pussy footing around and not just trying 100% for something new.
