I'm not uncomfortable buying toys at all. I'm an adult, I make my own money, and I pay my taxes. No one has a right to tell me how I should spend my time or my money (so long as it's not infringing on anyone else's rights).
The only aspect of toy collecting I'm ever ashamed to engage in is asking a clerk to look in the back of the store for something I want. I rarely do this, since I feel like I'm being obnoxious at that point. Anyone ever feel similarly? |

Never. I don't care who or what sees me looking for Joes at a store.
Most of the time, especially if its a chick, I'll just talk to her about how shitty scaplers can be while she rings me out!

Ain't nothing new under the sun, my friend. You got the disposable income to have a hobby you enjoy - have at it without shame. Besides, these cashiers are bored outta their skulls and making light conversation. They have seen guys older and less attractive than you buy Hot Wheels cars or Star Wars figures by the handbasketload so whatever.

I stopped worrying about what other people thought of me when I was about 27. I love my hobby and have found that when you can just be yourself, and tell people it is a hobby (never say you are a collector: bad jujus) sometimes it opens doors, literally. I absolutely love toys, and my son and daughter have benefited from it. Screw people who scoff at you. and to add to the above advice regarding sex: if that person who is slamming your hobby also happens to be your lover, then they need to get over it or get on down the road. If they cant cope with a harmless hobby like this, then they dont have the fortitude to make it as a life partner when crap really comes down hard.

I used to be embarrassed but pretty soon you realize that as long as you're not obnoxious(hot wheels scalpers) nobody cares what you do. Or should care. Everybody has their quirks, and collecting toys is probably one of the single most inoffensive things a person can do.

its funny, cuz i'll look at tha cashiers just see if i can catch them giving me funny looks or somethin lol. not sure how many i've gotten or if i have at all lol, cant remember. but i dont care, i'll take tha looks or comments if they're attached to a whole wave of mu or joes lol. cuz i'll definitely take tha looks and tha figs anyday over not getting any looks and missing out on figs. i go str8 to tha toy aisles or if im at tru, im up and down all tha action figure aisles, well except tha one with tha wresting figs, that aisle sucks lol.

No, I usually have no shame. A few months back though I bought an A-Team van at Target and while waiting to check out some snotty little girl said real loudly" Mommmy, why does he have a toy?" and I felt a little embarrassed.

I think the only time I have ever been truly embarrassed buying toys was when I was younger. I was out shopping with my mom and had picked up a couple of figures. At the check-out, just as I was handing them to the cashier, that chick that I'd had a crush on since 2nd grade strolls up and asks what I'm buying. Today, I wouldn't care, but at the time I was at that precarious age where you're not supposed to be buying toys anymore... You're supposed to be doing other things. Things that are cool. LOL.
Now, I think it's funny when my kids and I are at the store and the clerk tries to hand my stuff to the kids. "No, no - those are for me, ma'am!" |
